Make sure to tell them you want to apply for Supplimental Security Insurance, NOT Social security/disability! SSI is for minor children with a disability. It is based on your income. If you get SSI, you will also get medicaid. You can still get medicaid without qualifying for SSI.
Social security/disability is for someone who is in the workforce and pays into social security out of their paycheck. Once they become disabled, social security pays what they've put into the system. Their children and caregivers can also collect benefits. It is not based on your income, but what you've paid in and how long you were in the workforce.
