We have handicapped tags for Tommy. I get reallllllly ticked off when there are no spots! He has a TON of medical equipment that I have to schlep everywhere. Even if he doesn't get out of the van, we still need handicapped parking with wheelchair access because if he needs to be suctioned or other attention, we can't open our van door to get to him if a car parks too close to us. There may not be time to move our van just so we can open the door to get to him. 9 times out of 10, I will run into the store while DH sits outside with him. I'm sure many people have wondered what my "handicap" is. In our case, a handicap spot is not a convenience, it is a necessity and could mean life or death if we could not get to him.
In the event he does go in with us, wheelchair access is also a must because it takes about 5-10 minutes to get out his stroller and load up all of his medical equipment and him. He has to go everywhere with it and we can't leave any of it behind. We need the space to load up his gear without worrying if we will get run over.
