So I've known for years that my ds is ADHD. I have no doubt in my mind, you can spend one hour with him and know-he was bouncing of the walls at 18 months. My dh is also, so no surprise. However, he's only 4 so I haven't had him diagnosed and probably won't for awhile. Honestly I probably should, but I don't see the point since it's so obvious and I don't want to medicate him. He can't even sit still when he's eating, and on the rare occasion he watches tv he bounces the whole time-just to give you an example. I already monitor his diet and will continue to as he grows older. I already provide structure and since we are homeschooling we won't have the problem of a class situation and can work around his hyper-activity.

But, what I'm wondering is if anyone can recommend reading for me about ADHD children? I've been researching and there are so many books out there that I wanted to know if any specific ones had helped your family. Our library doesn't have a big selection so I'm going to be buying.

I'm hoping to be able to work with him with more patience than I do now and I really want to wait as long as possible before having to medicate him, I'm sure when he's older it will be necessary, but I hope to delay it.

thanks for any suggestions!

Amazon is the cheapest place to buy these books, I've found. Here are some titles that were recommended to me by those in the know:
However, my focus has been on the Aspergers side, so I haven't gotten to these yet. Amazon's reviews have been VERY helpful in my choosing the right books so far.

Taking Charge of ADHD
by Russell Barkley

ADHD/Hyperactivity, A Consumer's Guide
by Michael Gordon, PhD

CHADD - Children and Adults with Attention ?Deficit Hyperactive Disorder

Driven to Distraction (sorry, I don't note authors on the last two, but Amazon should make it easy to find them).

I would also get "The Out of Sync Child".

I would still get the diagnosis, although they may feel it's too early of an age for the label. Getting a dx doesn't mean you have to medicate, but it does open doors to understanding the condition, along with ways for him and your family to cope, along w/suggestion in how to help him learn best. ADHD is a medical condition and may require certain accommodations. Schools need to know so they can deal appropriately. Nobody is going to make you medicate if you don't feel it is in the best interest of your son and family.

I hope this helps!!
