Growing up as I did, where we got knocked down to size (smushed) at every turn, we tried to be careful to keep the kids' self-esteem intact. Some days I find DS feeling down and frustrated with himself, such a perfectionist, other days, lackadaisical, and still other days proud of himself to the point of having a superiority complex. Of course, the best days are when he does something that's a REAL accomplishment, like recently getting up to 90 wpm in reading, vs the 11wpm he started the year off with.

Do you see cycles like this, or is your kid pretty even?

My dd's self esteem is very low. I try to boost her up as much as i can. Most of this stems from her anxiety issues and her struggles with learning in school. She's hyper sensitive to what other kids say to her, even if they are joking she takes it literally. She's in the 6th grade. Personally i think grades 6-8 are the worst as far as kids teasing and taunting each other.
My cousin Jeremy who is like a younger brother to me(long story), wrote her the sweetest note on her birthday telling her how pretty she is getting each year- she was on cloud nine for days!!! Of course i tell her this alot but it's coming from mom so she brushes it off.
