Does anyone do this with their child? How receptive are they to the technique? Does it seem to help?
My dd's OT wants to talk to me on Monday about starting this with her...I really just know the basic info about the technique and I am a little bit skeptical of how receptive dd would be to this and what kinds of ?'s to ask the OT....any input anyone has would be appreciated.

My son Tommy had multiple surgeries and a lengthy hospital stay at birth. By the time he came home at 2 1/2 months, we could not even hold him without him hyperventilating. He started OT at 5 months old and the first things we did were brushing and compression. It was wonderful! He really enjoyed it and it became a special time for us. We used the techniques for about 3 or 4 months and he became less and less adversive to all of his sensory issues.

Basically you or the OT will use a surgical scrub brush to brush her arms, legs, hands, feet, back, etc. Joint compression is especially relaxing because it's like a massage.

Hope this helps a little. Feel free to PM me if you have more questions.

My DS was 4 when both were recommended. When he would let me do it, the brushing seemed to have no effect. I did not feel comfortable w/the compression because it had been explained to me in about 20 seconds.

I think my son benefits from almost any other sensory task - lifting heavy objects, hopping, punching a punching bag or balloon, banging a drum, etc. more so.

I do it all the time with the little guy I work with (I am a special ed para). He really seems to like the compressions. The brushing doesn't seem to do much for him.

One of my ds was a very early preemie and we did brushing and compressions with him until he was about 4. It was fantastic. He has only a few sensory issues now. Very manageable though. He is 9. He still likes a good massage I'd highly recommend.

I didn't think DS would take to it, but he did. It's very centering and calming for him.

We did it for a while with our oldest dd when she was about 4 or 5. She seemed to like it quite a bit at first. Later on she didn't, but I think at that point she no longer needed it.

my dd just got perscribed to do the brushing. she did not seem to mind it too much. The compression thing was also only vaguely explained to me, so I dunno about that.

when I worked in preschool, there was a little boy there that I did brushing with, he responded to it wonderfully!

hope it works well for you

take care
