Here's how I explain ADHD to everyone, including my son.
Have you ever been watching TV and someone else had the remote? You start to watch a show. Click! Then you're interested again. Click! Again. Click! Click! Click! That is how a person's brain with ADHD works. Like someone changing the channels in your brain with a remote you can't see.
I remind him he isn't a bad person and that his brain is wired differently than others. It doesn't make him better or worse. Some people have brown eyes, some blue. Some people are born with ADHD.
Having ADHD is not an excuse to get out of chores or schoolwork. Yes, I understand it's hard to concentrate when the freckle on your arm looks like a pear, or a bird outside the window looks really cool. I tell him this is why he takes his medications. To help him concentrate. Our house rule. "Medication does NOT make you behave. It helps you to REMEMBER to behave".
