It was clearly apparent today that his anxiety sometimes gets the best of him. He was diagnosed with this 2 weeks ago and is receiving in school social skills groups and outpt. therapy. We went to the pool club that we belong to in town for it's opening day and it was really crowded and very overstimulating for him. He did not cry, but was chewing on his hands and was saying really goofy things to other kids and it was hard not to notice that some kids were looking at him like he was a weirdo, which of course bothered me. My DH pulled him aside, got him to regroup and he was bette after that. He is not afraid to make friends, but sometimes just jumps right in, in a awkward way. I just felt kind of bad today... Thanks for listeing to me!!!

Dont' feel bad.. I'm sure you son had a great time at the pool! If he is happy that that is what matters. That is great he is getting support and help at school and at home to help him adjust. Good luck!

My son has episodes like this too. I share your pain. My son has improved since last year and I try and focus on the advancements he has made.

Thanks for sharing. It's comforting to know I'm not alone.

Are there any books you've read that have been helpful? I'm reading Your Anxious Child by John Dacey and Lisa Fiore. It's okay.

That's an odd name...I've never heard of it - I don't like it. My son is very anxious in certain scenarios, too, and was seeing someone, whom I thought was ineffective in it, but it helped him to at least talk about it. I'm glad he was able to be talked down. THAT is a skill!

One thing that was strongly suggested for us is to get DS back into karate, as it teaches him self control - I think that'll help w/his ADHD, too. I wonder if Amazon has any books about it. DS can identify when he's anxious, much of the time, but it still manifests itself in odd ways at times. It's more a thing of redirecting often.

It is actually a DSMV ???? diagnosis. It is another name for "generalized anxiety disorder". In adults it would be referred to as this. He is actually doing swim team summer and playing baseball now. Baseball has helped him alot socially and mentally this spring.

My son has similar problems with anxiety. His manifests itself with crying and hyperventilating. He has learned to calm himself down but sometimes still needs us to help him focus. It is very painful watchin him go through it. I do, however, believe it is something that he can kind of outgrow or at least better handle as he matures. For now, I get him all the help I can through the school and on our own.

Just know that you are not alone.
