Would you recommend this book? My daughter is diagnosed PDD-NOS and when I spoke to the OT about the Brushing/compression she recommended I read this book. Well I don't think she has that many sensory issues and the few she does have are relatively mild. She is rather unique in that some areas she LOVES the sensory overload...loves to be tickled, loves when I pour bath water over her hands and feet, etc... It's just so confusing to me because once I start to think a certain behavior is due to "issues" she is having, she up and changes her behavior
Anyway she definitely would not have enough criteria to be dx with SID so my question is would you still recomned reading this book or would I be wasting my time? Thanks.

I would definately read a book about sensory issues. The out of sync child is good but my all time favorite book is Raising a sensory smart child. It is a little easier to read and more specific. I just lent my copy to our OT and she bought herself a copy she liked it so much.

My child has a very mild case of SID and may end up testing on the spectrum(he hasn't been evaluated because his current diagnosis is getting us the help he needs.) Understanding the sensory component of a spectrum child is huge. It can make you life so much easier. One of the things you will learn too is that their sensory issues will change with therapy, age and exposure. SID is neurological so it will not be the same thing all the time.

I would at least try to check it out from the library or broswe it in the bookstore. I have helped my child so much by understanding him better and working with him as a result of reading.

Let me know if you have any questions. MY ds is almost 6 and was diagnosed when he had just turned 3.

I would definitely recommend this book, including in your case. It really helps understand how the child thinks and feels.

There is also a companion book to the Out-of-Sync Child w/activities you can do w/your child. You probably already do a lot of them but every new idea helps!

I started out w/the book Sensational Kids by Lucy Jane Miller. It did a good job of describing the different types of sensory disorders but rather vaguely mentioned occupational therapy as a way to help.

Yes, it's called The Out of Sync Child Has Fun. There's also Teaching the Out of Sync Child.
