How do you pay for it? How much does your insurance pick up??

DS was in speech and OT in his school, but the speech ended up as consultative only (I may push to get him back in because there are still some issues cropping up), and the OT was only 90 mins. a month. Not enough for real life. But the costs seem so high! Any ideas on ways to save there?

My son gets it at school for free. Also, based on his diagnosis, he is eligible for Medicaid which would help cover any costs that our regular insurance wouldn't (although I have yet to sign him up for that).

It depends on the mood your insurance is in. I have had them pay 100% unlimited, or none at all. Most common nowadays has been they will pay a portion, we pay a copay usually $30-$50, and only for a limited # of visits. Then we wait a month or two, and beg again for more visits. Our county briefly had a grant where DS could get therapy 1x a week on the county's dime; that program has since fallen apart. The main issue with my DS seems to be that he has a "chronic condition" and they only want to pay for "acute." Grrrr....almost seems discriminatory to me!!!!

DS gets free therapy at school, but honestly, it cannot compare to private therapy. I would almost venture to say that it is a joke I work in my school and see what they do, and for how long they actually work with the kids....so I feel qualified to say this.

There is a Medicaire Waiver program which DS has been on a waiting list for several years now.....he's nearing 10 years old and by the time he gets on he'll probably be too old for much therapy.

I suggest do what you can at home; therapists will usually give you a home program if you ask.

DS gets therapy at school for speech and OT but I pay for music therapy. Our insurance does not cover any type of therapy nor medical supplies. He really enjoys it and I save a little on it by using the students from the local university masters program. They are in their last year of school for this and need so many hours working with kids.

Our insurance pays for weekly OT for all 4 of my girls after deductible and coinsurance. Also my oldest did weekly seasons of speech therapy for 6-9 months that insurance also paid for. That being said my 5 yr old is just been reapproved for 1x a month OT session which is pretty useless in my opionion but we have an awesome OT therapist we said if I needed ideas or had question to either call or ask during one of the other girls' sessions.

We would never be able to pay for therapy if it was not covered by insurance. As far as cost saving ideas I would read the Out of Synch child and Out of Synch Child has Fun for OT ideas

Early Intervention pays for all of Tommy's therapies. When he turns 3, he will be phased out of their system and the school district will be responsible. I'm going to look into private therapy at that time. He is disabled and gets SSI and medicaid, so hopefully next year (when he turns 3), I can have him picked up by the therapists at the hospital, since I don't plan on sending him to preschool.
