It has to do with how they handle input into their senses. For instance, my son cried a lot. One of these reasons is the world was too "loud" for him. Tight clothes/itchy clothes drive him to distraction. He can't ignore it. Pain affects him more than the average person. I'm like the Princess and the Pea. A flickering light drives them crazy in a classroom, whereas most can ignore it...at work, I was always the first to call maintenance.

A great book, oft recommended, is "The Out of Sync Child". It talks a lot about sensory issues. My DS also had/has a huge gag reflex....my little diva has some of the same issue, but she shows no sign of being on the spectrum.
