Not sure if this is where I should post this or not.

I have a 10 month old DD. She is not hitting the "milestones" that the average baby does. At her 6 month and 9 month appointments I expressed concern to our doctor, but he doesn't seem to be the least bit concerned.

Like I said she is 10 months old. At her 9 month appointment she weighed 12 pounds 8 ounces. She was full term, delivered by C-section and weighed 6 pounds 7 ounces at birth. The doctor says she is just going to be petite.

She is not crawling, but she is starting to "scooch" (is that even a word?). She gets around by rolling where she wants to go. She can not get to a sitting position on her own, but if I sit her up, she can manage to stay sitting up for several minutes. Obviously, she is not walking.

She hasn't even said her first word yet. We do get some babbling, but not any "da, da" or "ma, ma". She has only recently started to giggle. She is quite responsive to you, but can't get a lot of sound out. She smiles all the time.

She is very alert and knows who people are when you call them by name. She loves to watch her big brother and our dog.

I have been concerned for quite some time, but keep telling myself that she is fine and just a little bit behind. I was wondering if any of you that have special needs children see anything alarming. I know that early intervention is key, so if there is something I need to do now, I would like to be aware of it.

Thanks for your help.

I have a 9 monht dd and we just had her check up. She is fine. She does all the things you described above. She is not pulling up nor crawling but scuches around on her tummy. She says only da da and a lot of other sounds but no words. She does weigh 19 lbs and is 28 inches long. Dr. said she could eat or drink anything she wants: juice, real milk, table food, ect. Since then, she eats spaghetti, squash, corn, macncheese. i have enough breastmilk for her to use until she turns one. What you described is basically what my dd is except for the weight. i wouldn't worry too much about anything else. all babies go at different rates.

If you have an instinct and you feel she might be behind milestones trust yourself and seek a second opinion. All kids are different though and she is moving and talking - but you will definitely feel better if you get another opinion. Don't spend a lot of time worrying, but do see if you can locate another Dr. or professional for reassurance.

I have developmentally delayed daughter due to a birth trauma. We have a "Birth to Three" program in Minnesota that came out each week to help us with her milestones. They will come out to your home and do a site visit. It is all free. We got hooked up in NICU. Check with your local school district.

My girl didn't start walking until 5 and is almost 6 and only has a handful of words. Her milestones are delayed - but we celebrate each one as it comes. I am sure your daughter will just be a petite one - but it never hurts to trust your mother's intuition.

Good luck, I will be thinking of you.

I have six children. My fourth child did not even roll over until 9 1/2 months old. He didn't crawl until over a year (which, btw, is not even a developmental milestone!!), and he walked at 16 months. He did the "butt scooch" forever! LOL He is now 7 1/2 YEARS OLD...and above average in all subjects at school. If you are concerned, I would definitely talk to the dr. about it...but also know that all children do develop differently, and the "milestone markers" are really more of a suggestion than anything!

I agree...if you feel strongly, go w/your instinct. Nothing in your post really caught my attention until you said she wasn't sitting up. I encourage you to push your doctor to see if you should see either a neurologist or a developmental pediatrician or some other specialist. She could be perfectly fine - my daughter didn't walk or crawl until 16 months, then we found she was anemic. Two weeks into the iron therapy (drops given orally) she was crawling and took her first steps on the same day. Now she is literally everywhere and even above the norms.

But it never hurts to check - except them when they get a blood test - but just for a minute.

I agree with the other ladies, follow your intuition. But I wanted to comfort you, too: Ds didn't crawl until he was almost one. He did sit up but when I picked him up, I had to support his head for a really long time - maybe two years?!

He was/is off the charts as far as weight, he's 6.5 now and around 42 lbs. and he's fine. I/my dh were skinny minnies when we were little, and ds is definitely taking after that.

He did start to talk a little at 6 mos, then scaled back and didnt REALLY start to talk until 2.

He walked at 17 mos.

Follow your intuition - I like the advice that says don't spend the time worrying, get them checked out and your mind eased. But know a lot of the things you described are 100% normal!

I have to agree with the others here. While I didn't see anything to alarming in what you wrote, What does concern me is your feeling that something is wrong. I feel very strongly that a mothers intuition is usually right. Go with your gut and have your child evaluated by a specialist.

Thank you so much for your replies and your concern. Sometimes we just need a little reassurance.

In my heart I feel like she is fine, just a little bit behind. But when you get people constantly asking why she isn't doing XXXX yet, you kind of begin to doubt yourself.

Those of you with special needs children have a lot of "hind site". I just wanted to make sure that her progress wasn't pointing towards any specific issues.

Her older brother was pretty much early on all of the milestones so this is quite a change.

I guess one area that she is ahead of the game is haircuts (not that haircuts are milestones that are watched). She is 10 months old and has already had four haircuts. I need to call and schedule another haircut. Her hair is getting in her face again!!!

Again, thanks for your input, I think I just needed to be re-assured.
