This subject has brought out some alarming results on an Aspergers group I'm in. We've found that most of us (not all have responded) either had a difficult pregnancy (causing bed rest) and/or had a difficult delivery. DS was born blue/black w/meconium and had to be revived.

What is the consensus here, especially those who have kids w/ADHD and neurological things going on (Aspergers and autism are neurological)?

Nope. I have two who suffered birth trauma resulting in NICU stays. They are both neurologically typical in development. Well, one talked fluently rather early. With dd who is autistic, I had an uneventful pg and uncomplicated delivery.

With DS I kept premature labor, had bedrest and still he was born a preemie. At onepoint they were having trouble finding his heart beat. He had lung issues and kidney issues. He spent a month in the NICU.

Matthew is my ADHD child and he was my healthiest pregnancy. No complications whatsoever. My water broke at 36 weeks and he delivered with no complications. He was readmitted for jaundice but that was it really.

I was on bedrest with Brandon (placenta previa) with him being a 36 weeker as well. He's been dx with Impulsivity Disorder-NOS.

Then Tommy is the preemie, lots of issues, but mentally we won't know for years.

My oldest was born at 41 weeks, no complications, no issues later in life.

I have never given birth to a special needs child but as you know desmom I am a nurse who cares for them.
In the past 8 yrs I have had 18 patients, 10 of them were born premature, 6 of them acquired their special needs because of a traumatic delivery. I had one child with osteogenesis imperfecta (brittle bone disease) and one who was born with a rare disorder (I don't remember the name.)

5 of the 6 traumatic deliveries have either ADD and/or Autism.
4 of the preemies have ADD and/or Autism
