When you first received your child's diagnosis, were you in denial at first? I remember being in denial about friends telling me their children were dx'd w/autism, but by the time I had my own child, and he was diagnosed as on the spectrum, it was actually a relief to know that it wasn't all me, and that it was him that had issues. Now it was time to find out what issues and how best to help.

According to my husband I still am . Seriously though, while I do agree with some of what the Drs. have said, I do not agree with all of it. I firmly believe that I am his mom and I know things that they will never truly be able to comprehend about my child.

I'm currently waiting for a diagnosis but the geneticist thinks DD might have Williams-Beuren Syndrome. She does have many red flags, but as of this moment I am in total denial.

I was in total denial for awhile when they(teachers) were telling me about Dd's anxiety issues at school and on field trips. I kept thinking she was just bashful or not overly outgoing compaired to other kids. Then it finally all came to a head here at home and i realized i was in way over my head, and this was something i couldn't brush off for dd with extra hugs or more reassurance, that i needed to get her some extra help.

Denial is a powerful thing and when you have a child with special needs there is a grieving process and denial is a place everyone goes through I was in MAJOR denial until my son was 8 months old and then when he was 2 1/2 I went through another stage of denial when we got the diagnosis of congenital Muscular Dysthrophy and it took me a year to speak the name of the disease... our brains play crazy things on us when we deal with painful issues I guess it is just a coping mechanism
