My sister found this web page doing a paper for college and sent it to me. It's really cool. It's called Autism cards. When your autistic child is having a melt down in public we all know the "stares" and comments we all get. So instead of putting your head down in embarrassment or crying (i do that sometimes on really bad days) or even yelling at people who make their dumb comments you hand them a card. One of them says:

If you are puzzled by my childs behavior????? It is not boldness nor lack of discipline!!!!!!!! My child is Autistic....... Autism is a life-long neurological disorder that prevents proper understanding of what a person sees, hears or otherwise senses. People with Autism often become confused and respond inappropriately in social situations. Autism strikes 1 out of every 166 people.

Then they feel like the dork.
I was so glad to get this from my sister and wished i had had it on several occasions. I was in the check out line with ds one day and he was just standing there but was "humming" it was a stim thing and to others probably annoying but I am use to it. Well this elderly man kept telling him to shhh. I finaly looked at the man and told him my ds was fine and that he is autistic. Well the man had a dombfounded look on his face but did stop telling my son to shhh.
There are other cards but they are older I had to change the one above because it said 15 out of 10,000 people have autism. We all know that number is way diffrent now. Anyway the web site is http://access.autistics.org/
I hope it is ok that put the web page on there. There is also a lot of other info for autism there too.

Thank you so much for a sharing the card site. I have also heard of T shirts. I think it helps us as parents to not feel so bad or get angry. It is so hard when my DS looks so NT and then does a complete temper tantrum in public.

Excellent site.
