If I shopped where some of these ladies shopped I could do it - I never see prices like some of the prices posted here - $1 for a pound of beef? Not even on managers rotty special have I ever seen that. I couldnt get much for $25 with the prices around me - though I'd shop sales with coupons really well that week to get the most out of it. So in respond to a pp who said $100 was a lot to spend per week - I live in a very high cost of living area - I probably get as much as you do for your $40 with my $100 - no exaggeration.
Anyways, I could do it, but it wouldnt be all too healthy!
Bag of frozen chick - $6.99
Gallon whole and 1% milk - $3.99
Loaf bread - .99
small block of cheese - 2.49
rice - $2.50
bananas - $1.39
eggs - $2.45
Leftover $ would spend on whatever was on super sale - mac n cheese, noodles, soups, etc.

I have to be honest...I don't think I could do a $25 grocery list. $50, maybe, provided we could go into our stockpile. But, we have several medical issues, including diabetes, high blood pressure, reflux, a swallowing disorder and a milk allergy. Just my DS's rice milk alone runs us about $10-$12 a week.

The $1.00 ground beef was me, and I just wanted to clarify that it wasn't a manager's rotty special! It was a weekly coupon special and it was limited to 1 pound at that price. Just about 100% of the items on my $25 shopping list were sale items from fliers for the week, or normal prices at Aldi's. I basically stock up on loss leaders and fill in the rest with sales/coupons.
$25 wasn't easy, but it certainly was doable, and I don't think we would have had to sacrifice too terribly much in terms of quality or amounts.

Well, I have to admit that I keep a full pantry because I don't want to get to $25 for a week. We can eat cheaply, but I don't think I could feed the five of us on $25 without a stocked cupboard. It doesn't help to have two teenage boys, one of which is extremely picky.
I do find it helps to have a few meals that are super quick and super cheap that the whole family will eat. With a few days of cheap meals we can get by on much less.

I found this a couple days ago while looking for meal plans.
Meals for Hard Times | Frugal Menu Planning | Menus4Moms
It is not healthy but I think the question at hand is can we survive. I think back on the Great Depression. Those people were trying to survive not live a healthy life. What would happen if we had no real amount of money to spend on food.

I'm curious about that link so when I'm done typing this I'll check it out...
I'm a single mom or a super tight budget and frankly I would NEVER (yes I'm saying never on this one) be completely without money for food. I would be working 10 jobs before this would happen!!!!!! Off to check out that article now...

Ymmm, it IS really GOOD. I ate it when I was in SoDak, right smack into a German community with lots of first generation Americans, parents from the old country. I've been wanting to make some for quite a while but never remember it when I'm doing meal planning. We've since moved away, I have not had even one bowl. Thanks for the reminder. Gonna get on it.
I was thinking that with the chicken bones, I'd make noodle soup, obviously very similar to knoepfla. I make at least three quarts at a time for just me and DH, and over half of it is gone the first time I make it. He really loves it. I do, too, but since I started Weight Watchers a few months ago, I've been really careful with my fat intake, so don't eat quite as much. Sure is hard to pass up.

For most, on average, this would mean about a week. I'm just posing the question - would your family be able to survive to your next paycheck with just $25? What would you buy?
If I were doing this, I could buy:
Eggs, 2 doz. $3.00
Chicken, whole $4.50
Milk $2.30
Margarine $.75
Rice $2.00
Pasta $1.00
Beans, dried $1.20
Bread $1.00
Broccoli, Frozen $1.50
Peanut Butter $2.50
Cheddar, block $2.50
Potatoes $3.50
Salsa $1.50
These are based on Aldi prices. The total comes to about $26. I could make several meals with these ingredients, starting with the chicken. I'd boil the bones to make broth and could turn that into a sauce for rice/broccoli casserole. The eggs could be the basis for breakfast for dinner along with the salsa, beans and Cheddar. We could fill in with peanut butter sandwiches. I think we could do it.
