I don't drive (eye issues) so we have done it for 17 yrs! We also live in a urban city with great public transportation. school is only a couple of blocks funny but I have never had to take the bus! When I worked I did have to wait an extra 20 minutes but he had to pass my building no matter so its always worked out. I would guess if need be it could be done but maybe a big pain. The couple I used to sit for have only ever had one car as well when one has a way to travel for stuff they rent one!

DH leaves at 4 am and gets home at 4 pm 4 days a week. I leave at 6 am (can't get in the office until 7 am) and am leaving work by 4 on a good day, have to do what is needed to get the job done though and it's not unheard of for me to be at work until 8 pm or later some days. For one car I would have to get kids up and in the car and leave to drop hubby off, come home and unload kids and get them ready for the day, leave and bring them to day care and go to work. Leave by 4 to pick hubby and kids up by 5. That schedule would not be fair to the kids, hubby would be doing about 1 1/2 hours of waiting after his day, and I'd get my butt canned from not being at work when deadlines come in. So nope lol, one car would not work!

Well, we would have to take DH to/from work since I need the car to haul 4 kids around to school/activities and there is no decent public transportation within walking distance for DH (the closet trolley station is about 10 miles away).
It would be too much of an upheaval to get the kids up early to take DH to work. The traffic getting there would be ok, but I'd be sitting in traffic trying to get back home to get the kids ready for school.
So, no, one vehicle wouldn't work for us.

If we absolutely had to we could. It would be easier now than in the school year though. Now I would just be stuck at home all of the time. Which some days that sounds nice!! But the kids would miss their summer reading program and the park day.
In the school year I would have to wake the kids up by 6:30 to get DH to work, get back get them ready and take the oldest to school, then the youngest to preschool, pick my oldest up early enough that I can get across town to pick DH up. I really don't want to think about having to do all of that.... my final answer is no.

Nope. We work in opposite directions, and slightly different schedules - vastly different if he is on overtime, same will be for me if I end up on overtime.
Even if I was SAHM still, we couldn't do it - it's a min 5 miles to ANYTHING here - gas station, store, whatever. Nothing in walking distance.

nope we live in a rural community so in order to get to any appts or stores we have to drive. I could do it for awhile but not in the winter it can be very cold and I would not want to walk the kids to school. Also dh's hours pose a challange he leaves by 4am and does not get home until 4pm at the earliest. I would not want to wake my kids up for an hour ride in the car at that time of day.

We have two cars, but my husband is a truck driver and only comes home on the weekends. So it would be very do-able for us to only have one car.

No way. My dh works an hour away and even if I drove him to work to take the car for the day my kids would be almost an hour late for school in the morning. If my kids were little and not in school we could make it work. I know because we didnt get a second vehicle until they started school. Taxi and bus service was my friend. Unfortunately in the town we currently live in there isnt either of those.

I never thought we could since dh works 45 minutes away and has long days, but we have had to a few times this year (we've had a bad car year).
It's not easy, but 2-3 days a week, I can drive him to the train at 6:30 in the morning and pick him up about 7:30. It's a long day, but doable. Some days he has to take the car because of late games or meetings. I don't like being stuck at home a couple of days a week, but learned to deal with it, at least I had the option to have the car on the other days. It would be much harder if ds was in school 5 days a week, we would have to find a carpool or something.

We have before, and if we had no choice, of course. It would be rough taking dh to work, going home and getting ready for school and then coming home, getting the boys, coming home and then getting dh from work, but you know...if there was absolutely no choice, we would have to.
