The sorts of things that I used to put in the stockings were girft certs, novels, small clothing, small electronic toys, comics, deck of cards (this has become a little tradition), knick-knacks, craft supplies, toiletries, candy, a few pieces of fruit. All that stuff seriously adds up!!!!!!!!

Thanks for all the ideas on how to keep the stocking and have them be more reasonable!
Please PLEASE keep that part then. Keep the 'tradition', then just throw in lil' candy and some fruit for 'filler' if that's all you can do. But if it's become a 'tradition',, that's something that they'll remember FOREVER and THAT is the important part of the 'gift scene' I think.

The harder it is economically, the more those small, frugal traditions mean. I understand, I raised 3 by myself on a shoestring for many years. They NEVER KNEW we were 'poor' though. DO shop through the year if you live near stores though. I MISS that since I now live in the boonies

I think stockings for us are just that "extra" special thing that makes the day seem more like what I remember as a child.

Filling stockings full of "I wants" rather than "I needs" is where it becomes costly.

PLUS I love stuffing the stockings vs. wrapping little things

Yes, I am doing more "needs" this year! I have been picking up kids toothbrushes, bandaids, bath supplies, socks and hair accessorires and a few fun things at dollar stores or Target dollar bin to throw in. I usually do some candy, but I think I'm cutting that out this year, except for one chocolate lollipop..this is the only thing that my son EVER remembers getting in his stocking anyway.....LOL

Us too! Usually good chocolate- that ends up being our breakfast. Not great for us, but it is only 1 day and the kids think it is sooo cool!

We LOVE us some stockings are our house so we won't be parting with those but I do like the suggestions of fruit in them. My DS adores pomegranates and at $3 a pop those are expensive. I think those will end up in his stocking.
