the thrill of the bargain and the ability to stay home with kids while not stressing about finances. when it was just the 2 of us and we both worked we both still were pretty thrifty. It's inbred in both dh and myself. also since staying home i feel more a responsibility to keep costs low. I think of it as part of my new job as sahm. even if dh made 200,000 a year I would shop at Goodwill and garage sales.

I am with allgirls. *Even when I was working, we were both pretty frugal. *Now, I, too, feel like it is part of my job as a SAHM to find ways to cut costs. *I love finding a fabulous deal, but even then I'm like "do I really need this?" *I want to be able to pay off our house early and I know that someday it will probably fall on my dh and I to help my parents. *My dad is a pastor and I am pretty sure that they have been financially unable to save up for retirement. *I don't want my children to feel like they need brand names to fit in or the latest toy/gadget and I want them to understand that $$$ does NOT grow on trees and that comes thru hardwork etc. *I guess I don't feel like I need to be saving in order to purchase something - I do it so I can live with freedom later in life.

I agree - it is part of my job as being SAHM.

The feeling of being out from under the weight of debt is so much better than anything I could ever buy, and allows me to be home with my kids is, as mastercard would say, PRICELESS.

My goal was to buy a house, we got that. Now the next goal is to pay the car off, working on that. Then after the car it will be the mortgage and then save to buy a business and be my own boss.
All the penny pinching is for the big goals. and the usual, saving for kids college, for retirement ect.

my kids motivate me and being able to be here at home for them. my mom was there for me as a child and so was dh's so that is important for us and i thank god my mom was home when i was a child since she died young when i was 17. that keeps me pinching pennies and my kids have realized money does not grow on trees and they understand the value of money wich i feel is a good life lesson we don't need all the latest and greatest everything.....

I am the same! The more I save the more I can spend on other things!

We are trying to start up a good college fund for our kids and anything extra that we save while shopping for clothes, food etc goes in a separate account for them. Knowing they will be able to go to college is a big motivater for DH especially because he didn't get to graduate high school. He had to drop out in 10th grade to get a job to help his mother who was disabled from a car wreck. He just got his GED last year and he wants both kids to have good education because finding jobs is VERY difficult without it.
