Im not sure if this is in the right category/forum so if not mods please feel free to move to where ever.
Okay so here is my question. I have tons of stuff (mostly clothing) to get rid of but I dont want to put it all on ebay b/c I just want it gone but I do want to try and get something for it money wise. Is consigning clothing worth it? Do you get actual cash or store credit or both? Also, do they give you cash up front or do you have to wait until your item(s) sell. I havent done any cosigning so any/all information would be of help. Thanks in advance!!

I'm guessing each shop is different but these are the terms of the shop I work with. You get a check or credit - no checks under $20. You drop off your items. They sort and give what they don't want to charity - fine with me. If the items sells, I get 40%. They do all the work including pricing the items. I've tried ebay and yard sales and it is too much work and I don't make that much for the work. I sold the very large items; changing table, car seats, etc. through craigslist. It works well and is definitely a good place to find deals on baby items.

We have a Once Upon a Child here, a consignment chain, and they give you cash right up front. Depending on how busy they are, you can usually wait for your money, or come back later in the day. They are rather picky, which is fine as a consumer, but too bad if you're the seller. They give you back what they don't want. I've brought a couple of small bags there twice and walked away with about $20. Not too bad when you're strapped or just wanting to unload!

I swear by consigment. Call around and check some diffrent ones in your area. The one I use, writes me a check and only takes 50%. One time I got a check for Christmas shopping, it was over $60! I was so excited.
Some tips:
make sure you rewash your items prior to bringing them in.
Also make sure nothing is stained or ripped.
Button all the buttons, zip all the zippers, snap all the snaps.
Don't bring items in a bag. Iron them prior to bringing them in, and bring them in a box, laid flat or neatly folded.
These are the rules my shop goes by.

The shop I work with gives you 50% of the sale. They go through & pick what they want & give back the rest. They decide on prices & you consign for a 3-month period. After the 3 months you call & make an appointment to pick up what didn't sell & a check for your 50%. I made about $500.00 this year on baby & toddler clothing that was cluttering up my house. Most of it sold, but I did end up with a small Rubbermaid bin of things that didn't. One downside is that she doesn't really keep any records that you get to see so you're really just trusting her word. I think she was honest & didn't make any mistakes, but I have no way of really knowing. You also need to follow their guidelines of what to bring. Like right now she's taking spring & transitional summer clothing.I started my consignments in August with winter clothing. She also limits how much you can bring at one time. I did a total of 3 consignments ( 3 lg. Rubbermaid bins each time) I would say, look up the #s of your local shops, call each one, ask about their policies, rules, what they are accepting, etc. and decide which one will give you the best deal. I chose the one I work with because she was the only one I found who gave you 50%. Others in our area only give you 40% or less. I made a lot more than if I had sold them at a yard sale, & I've never sold on Ebay, so I am overall happy with my personal experience. Good luck!

I would take ladies clothing to a consignment shop vs. listing on ebay because as a shopper, I know that I want to try things on before I buy them. You won't make a ton of money (I usually spend mine right there!) but it's something

In my area, we have large consignment sales. You get to price the item yourself and you keep 70% of the profits. They are usually twice a year. The spring/summer sale is at the beginning of February here. I usually make $100-200 per sale. The only draw back is that you need to prepare the clothes for the sale (iron, place on hangers and tag.) However one of the consignment sales I do is know letting you electrioncally input the price. I like these sales since I can make quite a bit more than if I went and dropped everything off at a consignment store.

I am going to try to sell my youngest clothes on Craigslist. I was going to try to do a yard sale- but I would rather have them out of the house now! I will be posting them later on and I will let you know how that went!
BTW- I used to do consignment but I felt the owners took advantage of some of the stuff!

Well, I am trying to get into ebay but at the same time I dont want a ton of stuff hanging out at my house either. It all just gets stacked in the corner until it gets sold but its really bugging me! Plus, lately I havent gotten alot listed on ebay w/ all of my family stuff going on. We just never know when we are going to have to leave out of town at a moments notice. So for now it just seems easier to do the consignment thing and not have to worry ab out people paying and getting things mailed out.
