I dont either. Dh has a great retirement through work. Right now we are literally living paycheck to paycheck. Our money is budgeted down to the penny. So by the time the bills are payed there is no money! Which means if anything upsets our balance we are pretty much screwed.

please please please ladies - from my personal experience over the last year - please set up your own retirement funds. Whether you work or not you can set up an IRA. Please have your own retirement account under your own name. There is no reason NOT to and lots of reasons TO do it. If you're already contributing to your DHs account, just take 1/2 that amount to contribute instead to your own IRA. Make sure that you will have your own $$$ when you retire.

off my soapbox now

Lou

My husband has a 401k through his work and we have money in several savings accounts (we also have college funds for the kids and an IRA that we never actually manage to put money into). We also have whole life insurance policies on myself and both our kids that could be cashed out in case of an emergency (although there's not much cash value right now). I still feel like we live paycheck to paycheck though and we don't have 6 months worth of my husbands salary in short-term savings as the experts recommend (that would be my goal).

Dh and I each have a 403B through work and we contribute a lot because he publishes a website and does not get taxes taken out of what he makes so we do not get killed at tax time and addition to what we put in our employers match some. We are also both teachers so we have a retirement fund through the teachers retirement association and I have another one through a part time job that i don't work much at, but used to since I had the job since I was 15. We also both contribute to a roth every month and we have money market and we have a savings account. Both our kids have a 529 account that we contribute to monthly and I buy them a savings bond every month and ds has a education ira which I put all his gift money in and any money I make when I do work at my part time job. dd is only 3 months so I haven't opened her education ira, but she was baptized two weeks ago and got a lot of money, so I will open the account and put it in soon and then I will split my part time job money between the two.

Yes, we do have a savings account, and some bonds and mutual funds, as well as small college savings accounts for both our kids. My dh does have a sizable 401K, but I also have some money saved of my own. I had owned a house before I married dh, so when we sold it he had me put all the money into an investment acct of my own. So we have mine, ours, and kids...plus dh has the 401K. But I still consider us living somewhat paycheck to paycheck because I refuse to spend our saved money and I refuse to go into debt, so we just live off of what dh makes.
