For windows 95 and up users:
In your main control panel (when you click on your start button, the menu that pops up) there should be a thing for printers and faxes, click on that, right click on the printer icon, scroll down to properties, click on it. Look for 'printing preferences' click on that, under the paper/quality tab on the right is quality, drop down the box and it will give you, draft, normal, best and some other settings, click on the one you want (fast draft) and click apply. click OK, close it out. While you're in there, you can also click on maintenance and see how much printer ink you have, this way it doesn't catch you by surprise by running out in the middle of a document!

It takes me a long time to use up my printer ink because I always use "draft" mode
With my HP Deskjet in order to put it on "draft" mode....select "print"...before clicking on the print command...select "preferences"...and then select "paper/quality"...it is under the paper/quality tab that you have the ability to set it to draft mode...HTH

You can do it that way too, but I often just click print and forget to change my preferences, so I set it up to do it that way as a default ( how I explained it above) but that is another way to do it if you're good at remebering to check it each time.

Also, with some printers you can set the options to only print in monochrome or only print using the black ink (the definition will depend on the printer). Choosing this option will save your colour ink cartridges for the times that you need colour.
But beware because inkjet cartridges have a finite life and they will dry up all on their own if you don't use them. I think it's about a year for most cartridges. So even if you're super frugal and never print in colour, you'll end up having to replace the cartridges anyway.
