Since you don't know them very well but feel like you want to give a gift I wanted to offer this:
When dh and I married his office got together and took up a collection, with this one lady took and bought us a basket, and in it she put a bottle of champane, 2 flutes, a very small Yankee candle- it was almost like a votive only it came in a jar, a bag of Lindor truffles and a nice piece of cloth/towel to arrange it all on, the rest of the money that was collected she put in an evelope and attatched a card with all their names on it. She gave it directly to dh at the reception and he put it in our get away vehicle. It wasn't expensive champagne and they weren't crystal flutes it was just nice to have something to have on our honeymoon. You wouldn't have to put any money into an evelope unless you wanted too but a Honeymoon Basket is a gift that we now give as gifts because it was just so nice and no one else thought of it.

I say get what you want to get them. If you do have their registry and can find the items on sale somewhere else, I'd do that and then call the registry # and make sure they take it off the registry. But if that is too much hassle, I'd just get them whatever you want.

I've done both, but I don't think there is anything wrong with shopping else where.

Weddings are an occasion to celebrate, not to emphasize raking in a ton of loot.

I have heard horror stories when brides complained because the wedding gift they received was less in value than the price/plate they served at dinner! I was dumb-founded. Just because the couple decided to go all out and spend a ton of cash on their reception should in no way be a guide to other's spending habits.

As the "host", weddings are your INVITATION to your guests to help celebrate their love, not a requisition or work-order for presents.

Phew ok I feel better. If you go the towel route, pick a nice white or cream which goes with anything. If you have any extra, I'll send you my address. I still have the horrible emerald green and bright pink ones I bought before I was married!
