Having a discussion with DH about vacations a while back.....

We always go on a summer vacation for a week to a cabin, the same cabin every year. This past year we also went to Arizona to visit my parents for a week. So that's 2 major vacations this past year.
DH grew up in a family where they took vacations all the time, even little weekend trips, all the time.
I grew up in a family where a vacation was something you saved for and we only took about 4 major ones my entire childhood. Of course every now and then we'd have a small "weekend" type vacation, but not very often.
I was just curious, how others view this topic. DH will sometimes say "Spring Break is coming where should we go?" or "where should we go over our Christmas break"
and I'm the type thinking there should really only be 1 major vacation per year.

So I'm just curious, How many vacation do you take a year? How many major ones, and how many weekend type ones?

I don't think we have ever had a real family vacation and we have been married 22 years. Too many other things I would rather spend money on.

We go on at least one vacation a year. I am like your husband - I love to go places. The past couple of years we went on 2 major vacations. This year though we are only going on one - to the beach for a week in June. I think it helps me to make it thru the week sometimes knowing that I will be taking a vacation!!! My family growing up always went on one vacation for one week each year and then we might strike off for a weekend trip a couple times a year. But my DH's family was a different story. I think he had been on vacation 4 or 5 times growing up. I save up for vacation all year and to me it is worth it. I have a friend that does not go on vacation, instead she does something to her house once a year - last year she tiled her kitchen. It is all in what is important to you.

We try and take 1 family vacation to a resort type setting, we take a couples only vacation once a year, and then I take a week to 10 days vacation with my kids to visit my family once a year, and we take many many many weekend getaways a years, most of the time is visiting familes, and if there's a wedding or some family event to attend, we make a vacation out of it. We all love traveling.

Well in a perfect world I'd take several big vacations a year and a few small wknd trips. But realistically we can't afford that and we have so much going on it's hard to find that many free times for all of us to get together. Last year my dd & I went to Russia for a wk for her orchesta, and then our whole family took a four day trip to chicago to see the King Tut exhibit, shedds, field museum, and Medieval Time dinner theater. That's the only real "vacations" we took...although each of my kids went on wknd trips through scouts and things. (skiing, Wicked in Chicago, etc. ...) Most years we take one long one (rent a condo type thing) and one short one. We'd love to take a long vacation this summer as my dd is a jr in HS and I'm afraid we won't have many vacations left.

We've been married for 10 years and we've never gone on a vacation where we have to pay to stay anywhere. We visit family in another city twice a year and we stay at a relatives cottage (with them) for a week in the summer but we've never gone anywhere like a resort, cruise, rented cabin or anything. I'm thinking for our 25th anniversary in 15 years we should go on a cruise, but knowing me, I'd rather visit family and save the money.

We go to the beach for 1 whole week in the summer. And we try to go over night somewhere at least once a month from May - Sept. We try to do different things. We take alot of day trips.

As a kid I didn't have a great loving type family. But we did take the camper and go on a family vacation every year. I have to say those vacations are my most cherished childhood memories. Spending happy times away from the home with family. We can't afford to go on big vavactions every year. But we do go on day trips to the ocean, parks, picnics, the pool and such. We have gone on a few vacations. But now with tuition coming up we'll have to save up awhile for the next one.
