Not sure where to put this but Ikea will began charging .05 cents per bag used from their store to promote conservation. I think this is a good thing. The news also stated that some of the grocery stores in the San Francisco area will have a choice paper or paper! They will be disposing of plastic bags all together. IMO this is progress for the environment.

That is how Aldi's works, too. You pay for your bags, or you bring your own!

I read that whole the city of Toronto is considering charging 25 cents for every grocery store bag. That sure would stop a lot of people from using them!http://www.tobserver.com/CYCLEFEB07/...asticbags.html

I think the Toronto thing is excessive. Geez!

The IKEA one, though seems good - it isn't a lot of money and will make people pause to think for a minute. However, I think it would be better to give a discount if there's no bag, than charding extra for one.

I wish stores around here would drop plastic, or AT LEAST offer paper... I hate plastic. Publix is the only one that still reliably offers paper. I'd much rather load up one or two paper bags than have a gazillion plastic to carry... and I seriously load them up too!

It's funny... almost all German stores charge between 5 and 25 cents for bags - it doesn't matter whether it's a drug store, grocery store, or IKEA. (although IKEA here only sells big giant bags and I think they cost a whole Euro.) And the ONE grocery store that has free (paper) bags is the one I love to shop at.

But ok, it's good for the environment and those green Germans are all just a little more advanced when it comes to being environmentally friendly. Still, I always get a twinge of homesickness when I have to pay for a grocery bag!

How will the SF and Toronto stores charge for bags and still have people bagging groceries for you? (that service doesn't exist here... )

i think this is a great idea!

i JUST was fuming about this yesterday at the grocery store! i bought 13 items and went home with 7 plastic bags! i hate how my eggs get one bag, my bread gets one bag, my broccoli gets one....

i remember the days when mom used to come home with paper bags and the eggs and bread were always sitting on top....

I think it's a very good idea!

I agree w/CrazyKelly, I can't stand the fact that they always put one or two items in a plastic bag. I always ask for paper, but sometimes they start bagging my groceries in plastic and don't ask.

At Trader Joes if you bring your own bags you can enter a raffle for free groceries. That's a good incentive for bringing your own.

But charging will help the people who aren't conscience of the fact that it's ruining the environment!

Yep. When we lived in Europe, you paid for your bags at most places (we lived in Switzerland but did a lot of grocery and that type shopping in France and Germany)...I think it's a great idea! I used fabric shopping bags.
