i agree with most everyone that i'm also in the middle of these two. i like good name brand clothes at the lowest price. i only buy a set amount of outfits for my kids.. but i do get some of the name brand stuff for cheap at goodwill...but goodwill hunting is a hobby of mine...alot of times i get nothing when there...

I have the amount of Amanda...I shop like Betty. If they both took ideas from each other just think of all the extra $ they would have! If I have to choose though...I pick Betty.

I agree with Happymom - it is really not a matter or right on either side, but of personal preferance. I probably lean more towards Betty with the exception that I don't buy the stuff. I have 3 different people giving me hand me downs for my dd and have quite a stash of really nice clothes - I also share with a friend of mine since there are so many. Her birthday picture, which I may post here, will be in a hand me down dress. The same goes for toys. I rarely buy them toys outside of Christmas and birthdays and try not to do it a lot then because of all the relative presents.

The boys have hand me downs, too, just not as much as my dd.

Yes, a mixture of both is the best of both worlds - however when it comes to clothes I would rather have some nice good quality clothes and a bunch of cheaper clothes to stay in the house with than ruin the nice ones while cleaning house.
The toys, enough for a room is enough, too much cleaning up and you start iching to give or throw things away.

What about buying fewer, nicer, clothes, toys etc from garage sales and thrift stores? The sentiment seems to be that either you get a FEW nice, new things...or TONS of yukky, but cheap things. I am all for nice, quality things that do not necessarily have to be new. Just my opinion...

That's a good point. The other argument I heard from 'Amanda' (they are both friends of friends) is that by buying thrift and 2nd hand, at least she is promoting recycling and environmentalism. But then Betty thinks Amanda is being wasteful by having too much stuff. These two women both have the goal of frugalness but they can't seem to see eye to eye. Kwim?

Maybe the perfect answer would be to have a small amount of really nice quality things that you were able to get secondhand . Then you have the best of both worlds, kwim?

I think it's personal choice. Quantity vrs. Quantity. Kind of like would you rather have a smaller gem but of exquisite quality, or a larger gem with a few flaws. Some people would rather have more stuff, some want top quality but only want to spend a certain amount. Personally I'd rather have less but of higher quality, although I do admit to having a larger diamond that is not flawless
