Recently I read that a load of laundry cost .40 a load to dry. Wish I could remember where I read that! Any one know? Of course that motivated me to start hanging out my laundry. Especially since we are into the 60's here My investment two bags of clothes pin from the dollar store. Since I do about 8 loads of laundry of week Ive already made up for it! Wahoo! Tried something new and its working
Just found this energy calculator. According to this a dryer load cost .30 cents. A ten min shower will add .62 to your electric bill.

I didn't realize it costs that much. I air fluff mine then hang them up on clothes lines inside. My family has allergies so it wouldn't be a good idea for me to hang our clothes out. It is a perfect day to hang the wash out though.

Good for you on saving energy & money !!!

I also just started hanging ours to dry because our utility bill was set to increase 24%. I do believe it saved us because our bill was less than the prior month and it should have been at least $20-$30 more with the increase. We also started turning our pc's off- monitor and all. We use to leave the monitors on and I read somewhere it sucks up power so that must be saving us as well!

Glad it's working for you too!!!

I like knowing the smaller costs of things like that. I also heard it costs 25 cents a flush (high water costs in our area) but in that case, I don't flush any less.

Anyone else know how much specific things cost?

How much to bake bread for an hour in the oven? Less than buying the bread?
How much for a bath? A shower?

I heard that every degree you turn your thermostat down to in the winter, there is a savings of 2%. I'd be motivated more by an actual dollar amount. Like $1 a day per degree.

The Tightwad Gazette has some figures like these but you really have to figure out the exact amount of energy your appliance uses for the time you use it and then figure in the cost of electrity where you live..... way too much math! I am certain, however, that if you do not use your dryer as much then you will not have to pay as much to use your dryer! I am very profound today!! KathrynHannah, I would start going in the bushes if it really is a quarter a flush!

It is funny that we were talking about this today because I just got the April issue of Real Simple this afternoon and there is a great arcticle about things we can all do to help the earth. I was very proud of my family because we already do almost every single one. I will work on the others now... but it said that the average US household spends $135.00 on electricity for drying clothes anually. So... there you go!

This actully is a fantastic issue - full of a lot of things that we are always talking about on here. I will post more ideas from it when I get a chance. Check out Realsimple.com too. They usually have a lot of the important points from the magazine there.

Wow! It's amazing how those little things add up! No flushing less here either- while I do try and conserve water by not allowing the little ones to create their own splash zone through repeatedly flushing for fun, I will not let stinky pee sit in the potty - especially when its 80 degrees outside! Too many little hands (and animals) that want to make the potty their own personal water park and too smart for those child proof locks!
