I live near the main campus of Penn State University. Every year the Untied Way holds a "Trash to Treasure Sale" somewhere on campus. Items that the students either left behind or donated at the end of the Spring Semester are organized and priced, the sale is advertised and open to the public. Anything you can imagine has been at these sales for a fraction of their original price. Many things are in like new condition - the bargains can't be beat. Proceeds of the sale go towards the non profit and charitable groups the United Way provides funding to. When my kids were younger I used to go get area rugs (room sized) for $5. I have also purchased many down comforters and shelving units for under $5 each. The sale has prevented over 20 tons of usable goods from going to the landfill.
