My 14 year old cat was diagnosed with diabetes. For a supply of insulin (Humulin-N) and syringes at the local CVS it is going to cost around $50 a month for these supplies. Ouch that is a big chunk of change I hadn't planned on. Any good tips for saving money on this? I wish I could add him to my insurance plan - he's definitely a dependant!

When I was nursing my cat during renal failure, the syringe and bag of saline were close to $30 per bag! I called around and found medical supply places. The one I found even delivered/mailed. I did need a prescription from the vet, but the bag of saline ended up costing me $1 each, and the needles were like $5 a bag. I imagine you can probably get some on the web, but I'd be leery, especially for non-american ones. Your vet may even be willing to let you know who their supplier(s) are.

Years ago I saw an ad for Pet Insurance. I don't recall how much it cost but the policy may save you money in the end..? Try a Google search.

I have a diabetic cat as well! I buy my supplies at Sams Wholesale Club, they have their own generic brand. You don't have to be a member to purchase at the pharmacy. Someone said Walmart has good prices. They are affiliated so they may be the same as Sams.
Also, you will probably be using small doses, My Vet says that you can keep the insulin in the refrigerator until gone even though the package will say only 30 days. We've cut our costs to about $20 per month-that's for 9 units and 3 syringes per day and she is doing pretty well.

Good luck!

* Also check with your trash service about needle disposal. I was buying sharps containers, but found out I can use a detergent bottle! That saved me a few bucks too.***

Thanks for the help! I will call Walmart and Sam's to check out their prices on insulin and syringes. I will also see if the vet can recommend a medical supply place. I did check out the internet, but didn't find any outstanding deals on the insulin unless I bought 3 or more bottles at a time, I was hoping to avoid doing that. If anyone else has anything to add I would still be interested.
