ok i bought my 1997 plymouth grandvoyager for 1600.00(fil got at auto auction) 2 years later it has 225,000 miles on it and i have put a grand total of 600 bucks into it. so until i get over half the value of the purchase price in the van i will keep driving it.

that said if you can't afford to make the reapairs then you need to look at the options the only thing is if you buy another used vehicle you do have to start over and work out any repairs ect. so it can be a tough decision we have never gotten rid of a vehicle under 200,000 miles. heck our chevy s-10 pickup we had made it to 375,000 miles with minor repairs like tires oil changes everyday stuff...so it also depends on how good the vehicle has been for you.

When you say your van has a little shake, what does that mean? Is it something in the motor or the transmission? The muffler problem is just a normal wear-and-tear repair.

I say that I drive vehicles until the wheels fall off, but in reality I drive them until they become unreliable. I've gotten rid of a vehicle with only 14,000 miles on it that I bought brand new because it could barely make it out of the driveway (it was a 1986 Ford Escort; what a piece of junk -- I will never, ever buy a Ford again). The longest I've held on to a vehicle was 125,000 miles. It was a 1986 Chevy Blazer that was starting to have a lot of issues. When it gets to the point that I'm not sure if a vehicle is going to get me where I need to go and back again, then I get rid of it.
