Discount Food stores can help to save quite a bit. Anyone else have one in their town? I am very lucky to have one in my neighboring town (used to live across the street before we bought our home)! It doesn't have a big sign or anything, I found out about it from word of mouth. They don't advertise either. They have food, no fresh or frozen food, only cans, boxes, containers, toilet paper, etc.
I can get real maple syrup for $2.75 for 12.5 oz. Boxes of cereal average $2.00, but when they go out of date they are marked down to $0.50 per box!!!! I bought a couple boxes being a little unsure because they had just "expired", but figured since they were still sealed, they would be fine, and they are. I got Kashi Go Lean Crunch for $0.50 per box!!! Aunt Jemima complete (add water only) for $.89 per box. Barilla Plus (in the yellow box) pasta is normally $.75 per box, but when out of date it goes down to $.25 per box. The same stuff sells @ Shaws for $2.00 per box. They sell all kinds of baby food for $.39 per jar-not outdated.
Unfortunately, the only real grocery store within a 20 mile radius for meat, fruit and veggies is Shaws, and they charge outrageous prices because of it. So, I end up paying more for the perishable foods.
