I turned our coat closet into a pantry, took out the bar to hang things and put in some free standing shelves. I will buy pasta and canned foods on sale and cereals, especially when I find the huge boxes of Cheerios for $2.00 and have a coupon. The other day, they were 2 for $4.00 with a coupon for save $1.50 on 3, which brought each box to $1.50. My kids eat tons of Cheerios!! Start small, don't break the bank starting. You can just get a few things each trip to the store and your stock will grow before you know it.
If you don't have a lot of room or live in an apartment or small house, you can look for creative ways to store your stockpiles, such as under the bed or I recently read of someone who used a huge crate in the living room to store stuff in and put a big board over it with a cloth and used it as their coffee table.
I should add that I don't stockpile meats and other freezer items, because I just have the small freezer in my fridge. If I had a larger freezer, I would be buying up all sorts of meats and freezer items as they go on sale.
