Older kids are WAAAAAAY more expensive. They care what they wear so you can't just pick up any old thing on the end of season rack at Kohl's at stick it on them like you do when they're toddlers. Plus school books are expensive and school activities.

Both of my teens also do lots of things that cost us a fortune. Yes, I guess we could refuse to pay for them, but we like them to have the enrichment. My 8th grade son is leaving for King's Island in Cinncinnati tomorrow for an overnight trip with the band (they're playing in a competition there).....hundreds of dollars for that. He's going to boy scout camp in June...$175 for that, he's going on the Boundary Waters trip with boy scouts in July...$1100 for that. He's playing football next year....can't wait to find out how much that is going to cost. We just got phase 2 of his braces for about $3000. Plus just all the odds and ends of going to movies with friends, etc.

My HS dd remember went to Russia last year with her orchestra....".ouch" on that $$. She takes cello lessons, and runs cross country plus does another youth orchestra outside of her school orchesta. Money for all of those plus the proverbial "fundraisers". We've already started looking at colleges. Holy moley for money for that!!! Plus she's getting ready to get her drivers license (she could have already had it...we've just postponed it) so we'll have to start paying teenager insurance rates.

So yes....teens are WAAAAAY more expensive. I long for the days where I could just buy diapers, cute cheap clothes and some fishy crackers. Aaaahhh.....the memories.

I saw the first spike in expenses when they were about 13 - it steadily increased till 17 then spiked again at 18

My teenager definately is more expensive than my toddler. Seems like my teenager needs money everyday for something. Not only are his clothes and shoes more expensive but he eats enough to fill up a horse.

Right now - college tuition! High school was pretty pricy, too. But for you with little ones - be sure to get your college savings accounts started NOW!

I am finding the teenage years to be very costly. The other posters are right, with the cost of sport fees, yearbooks, pictures and all the electronic and "brand name" clothing it is ridiculous!
