we are in iowa so its the humidity that gets us..its 8:30 in the morning right now and its already 80 degrees and almost 70% humidity outside...so the ac is on....

i set it at 77 keep the shades and drapes drawn once the sun hits the west side (luckily we have tons of trees that helps) when dh gets close to getting home i turn it down to 75 he likes it at about 70 but we have compramised...i also have fans running in our living room(it has 7 double hung windows so this room gets the hottest and the coldest first) and our upstairs(two story farm house) has no vents its on a seperate baseboard heating for winter but no air so we got an awesome fan we can point up the stairs then we run a fan in each room and keep the shades and curtains closed 24/7 and it stays usually around 82 even on a 90 plus degree day...

I am in SE Minnesota. We moved this year and in this house we do not have central air. We keep the heat at 67 in the winter. In our old house the air was set at 80. So far here we have just opened the windows and used the ceiling fans. I am sure we are going to put in a couple of window units but I will not use them until it gets miserablly hot.

hi-AZ here too!! ( waves to all the az folks)

I have a 2 story 2000 plus sq. foot house, we face east west, and we have high r-factor and shade screens on all our windows. plus they are dual pane.; plus I have thermal shades on the windows to pull down when it's morning and evening for the windows that get all that sun. we use time advantage for our electricity and only run major appliances after 9pm and before 9 am. we run our pool for only 4 hours instead of the suggested 12 hours by the pool company ( my pool is just as clean after 4 hours as it is after 12)

we keep our house at 80. the thermostat is halfway up the stairs so downstairs is probably 79 and upstairs is probably 81. it gets warmer in the bedrooms that have computers or tv's on. If I leave the house for several hours or all day I will put the a/c up to 83 or 84.
last year we had a rate hike and I had my first 300.00 electric bill ever since we've lived here. that's with keeping the house in the 80's.

today we had some fluke weather- and got down to 65 degrees at night . I was able to open all my windows and the house got down to 74. I was so happy, and I was thinking I wish I had the money to keep my house at 74 degrees all summer long. we usually swim in the afternoon to cool off and try not to heat the house up at dinner. Our summers last so long, i can't imagine the costs in keeeping my house 74-76 like all you lucky people. I started running my a/c probably a bit in April, half of May and it will be on until October.

Our central air is broken, so right now we are using two window units. One in my room, and one in the living room. It is okay at night with fans helping to circulate the air, but since we live in a little tin box (mobile home), it only stays about 5 or 10 degrees cooler than outside! If it gets too hot, we retreat to my bedroom. It's small enough the window unit keeps it cool. DH is going to have to work some serious OT to come up with funds to fix our unit before July hits us!

I went to HS in Summerville and my Dad still lives in the Charleston area!! I know it's hot there. I used to march on the blacktop in the middle of the day in August. I don't know how I did that!

We are now in central GA and I keep the air at 78 during the day. We have put the solar film on our windows and that is a huge help. We need to replace our windows, but that will have to wait. The air goes down to 75 at night and 76 when the kids nap. That might change when we get the next electric bill. If we have to turn the ac up at night I might have to start washing my hair at night to keep me cool while I sleep.

Colorado, here. In the winter, we keep the temp at 68 at night and 72 during the day. We have it a little higher now, than we did before we had kids. When the baby is a little older, we will probably lower the temp in the winter. In the summer, IF we turn on the AC, it has to be a hot day. DH tells me how much he hates AC, but he is the first to turn it on in the summer. We keep the AC at 77 and I only turn it on when the temp in the house gets about 85 or so.

What erks me is how people expect you to dress lightly in the winter, so they keep their heat up so darn hot. IT'S WINTER! I'm wearing a sweater! I don't need the temp to be 75! It really makes me mad when we go to restaurants, where I can't breathe, it's so hot in the winter and I've got goosebumps in the summer because the AC is dang high!! Does this make anyone else mad?

I keep the heat around 68 in the winter and turn the a/c on 75. We have 4 window units so it may or may not be 75 in here. My husband prompty makes it colder when he gets home from work. He also thinks he should be able to wear shorts in the winter and runs me out with the woodstove. I don't understand his logic. I wear a tank top & shorts in the summer and am outside most of the day with the kids so it feels good in here when it is 75. I would also rather wear a sweatshirt in the winter than have a hot house.

I live in the mountains of North Carolina where we are blessed with beautiful cool summers. We are at almost 5000 feet elevation, and when it is 90 down the mountain,( 30 minute drive), it is 72 here! with a breeze to boot! The bad part of it is that it is a very expensive town to live in...I Have never in 6 years of living here turned on the ac one time...now heating in the winter..THAT is another story!

I'm in Orlando and I keep the AC at about 76 but I have fans going wherever we are! I'm moving in a few weeks to South Carolina so hopefully I can raise it a few degrees (but I'm not counting on it LOL )
