How foolish people are to not buy generics. I know many people who refuse to buy the offbrand.

Cheer, Gain and Era are all made by P&G (Proctor & Gamble) who also make Tide. I can't remember which of the three but either Cheer, Gain or Era is Tide with water added. I think it is noted that it is actually cheaper to buy Tide and add water (making more).

As i sadi before i work for a pharmaceutical company and when we package brand name product of generic, it will be the same ingrediants, just different packaging and different name!
it makes sense, Aldi doesnt have a factory somewhere, where all their items are made, they are all outsourced to the packaging facilities to make a certain quantity of an item for them.

While most generics are the same as more expensive counterparts, being manufactured at the same place doesn't always determine that a product is the same. Otherwise you wouldn't have diet and regular soda bottled at the same facility.

I was going to say that too. I buy a fair number of generics, but sometimes you can TELL that it's not the same as the name brand. For example, mac & cheese. We've tried several different kinds and DH really only likes Kraft. There IS a difference. And I know my Oaty Os or whatever definitely aren't Cherrios, but interestingly enough I like my Os better. Do you think sometimes that the ingrediants aren't the same quality maybe? Like the water being added to the tide?

I work in corporate sales for a company that sells the name brand and private label or generic on the same invoice to most of your larger retailers. It is the same product in different packaging. I am involved in the private label side of the sales. The product is produced on the production line in the same warehouse.

I understand that it is the same product in different packaging (in most or all cases) but it can't be in ALL cases, can it??? I am just wondering because there are some "generic brand" items that are certainly not very good! (I am thinking of specific items like certain noodles that are horrible, ONE type of peanut butter, and others).

OK, I should have read the entire thread before I posted...sorry.

I posted this in another thread a while back, but I think it bears repeating here:

Consumer Affairs

It gets really interesting when you scroll down to the part that says: Who's behind the store brands?.

It's a good read. Enjoy!

I learned on Mr. Rogers (of all things ) that Wonder Bread and Wal-Mart Great Value bread come from the same factory. Mr. Rogers was doing a show on how bread was made and I noticed that the Wonder Bread and Great Value Bread wrappers were intermingled. In the closing credits, there was a special thanks to Wonder Bread.

I think that should be illegal. It's decieving consumers. I tend to be a brand snob on most things, especially on food.
