I go through periods when I save all of my receipts. Other times, I just save the "big" receipts. I don't think you need to save most receipts past the time they clear the bank and are on your statement. As long as they match the statement, they can get thrown. The ones I really keep an eye on are the restaurant receipts, because I have had some where the waitperson gives themself a little "extra" than I gave. I've actually challenged one that was almost $15 more than what I had actually gave. Other than that, I paper clip a weeks worth together and then put them in a manila envelope and file in my filing cabinet. We separate the "big" purchases before we file and put them in a folder marked "Warranties" or "Receipts to Save", depending on if there is a warranty or if it is something like clothing. When I worked in an office, the accountant had recommended we keep the receipts for a year, because of auditing, but I don't think that is necessary for your personal stuff. HTH.
