has anyone tried it? we have a store here that sells slightly dented canned goods, milk and meat that is about to expire, lots of cabinet filler stuff. they have a huge box of powdered milk for $6.50 (makes 5 gallons). way cheaper than paying 3+ for 1 gallon of milk. i wonder
if dh will notice?? kids said it tastes fine, but i'm a little leary...
this store is awesome... i just found it. i got 2 shopping carts full of groceries for $54.00!!!:happy dance:

We have a store like that here. They dont sell meat, but all sorts of canned and boxed food. Bathroom and kitchen stuff; cleaner, glasses, furniture. You name it and they probably have it.

I recently bought a box of powedered milk for a recipe that I wanted to make. I of course only need one cup (although the recipe I used it for, I will be making a lot more of) and had a box left. I posted a thread about powered milk too, I think my was on how long it was good for once you mixed it. I was very leary of giving it to my kids. I did give them some to drink, but I chickened out and made it chocolate for them. I did use it to make pudding and it came out great. I am only going to use this for recipes and cooking and NOT for drinking. But that is just my opinion.

PS-I didnt have the guts to try it. It looked yellowish.

Here is my families opinion but honestly it depends on what you are used to and what you are willing to drink:

For my family we typically drink 2% or whole milk so by itself it would not be to our liking and my husband HATES the taste of it straight. BUT i can mix it half and half with whole milk and no one notices the difference and it tastes overall like 2%. It is a big savings just 1/2 gallon at a time. BUT my daughter on the other hand loves it straight if you make chocolate milk out of it. SO use it however your family will let you in the end you will save. Cooking is always possible and it is nice to have it in the cabinet for when emergencies come up.

My youngest two don't know the difference. My oldest (almost 5) doesn't like it, and I remember my mom mixing it 1/2 and 1/2 with regular milk, so I'll have to give that a try. I do use it in recipes. The other day I was making gravy and the recipe called for 4 cups of milk, so I subbed powdered milk mixed up and no one noticed. And I thought it was just as good as when I use regular milk.

As far as how long it is good for once it's mixed up, I only use it for a day or two. I don't know how long it is actually good for. And I have used some powdered milk in recipes that is past the due date by a few months and it seemed fine.

I agree, it is nice to have in emergencies. Like it's 6:00 am and I look in the fridge with a crying one year old next to me and realize we are out of milk. Then it's a life saver!

I was raised on a dairy farm so that was one thing we never did and the only time I remember having it I thought it was disgusting. That said, we have friends in Costa Rica and evidently in their area powdered milk is very common. It's just what you're use to I suppose!

oh...a few more things to consider:

Make sure when you mix it you let it chill in the refridgerator for at least 2 hours. For some reason it really does help the taste of it.

-Anywhere you can use it you will be reducing calories AND saving money.

-It DOES matter if is within its good by date. It does taste a bit off or develop bad flavors if it is old. This mostly depends on how you store it and although it may taste a bit off it does not mean it is going to hurt you. BUT for straight drinking within date is best.

i still haven't tried it i'm too chicken, but my dd and my niece are gulping it up. we usually drink skim milk anyways, and dd said it's not that different. just a little gritty
i just can't do it. my mom used to make us drink it when we were little, but i am completely broke and figured this would work. maybe it will be okay with cereal... thanks for all the advice. maybe i'll try it tomorrow. maybe the kids will have drunk it all by then!

Chilling o/n makes a big difference. I drink it all the time b/c the regular stuff makes my tummy upset. It's cheaper and just one of those things that has helped our food budget. DS is only 1 yo, so I give him regular whole milk.
