I hear you!!! I don't like the smell of lined dry clothes, don't like the stiffness. But i do like the $ I save on my bill.
So the solution to this problem is after your clothes are dry bring them in, pop them in the dryer with a fabric softner sheet for about 10 min. This will fluff them, take out wrinkles, and make them smell good. Know one will ever know they were line dried.

I too don't like line dried towels all that much. Even putting fabric softener in the wash doesn't seem to help me. You can pop them in the dryer for just a bit to soften them up though. Still less electric than drying them all the time.

The electricity that I save by line drying counters the amount of electricity that the air conditioner uses at my house. For towels I caught this tip from a mommysaver and it works so well that my Dh can't tell the difference: Put the towels in the dryer for like 10 min before hanging them on the clothes line.... they will feel like they were dried in the dryer (unless there is no wind at all, then they will be slightly worse, but still a lot better then just hanging them out)

This is what my mom does. She allows the clothes to dry mostly on the line and then pops them in the dryer for just a bit to soften things up.

I personnally, just put things in the dryer. I don't want to take the time to dry them outside besides I don't have the clothesline!

If I line dry things they still go into the dryer for a few minutes to warm them up and fluff them.I don't like the stiff feeling.

I always dry towels in the dryer. Anything I do line dry I put in dryer when dry on no heat to toss them around. Its does loosen them up.

Towels are usually one of the things I don't put in the dryer, mostly because they are easy to hang up. The stiffness doesn't bother me, maybe because they sit in the cupboard for a week before I use them, or because once you've used the towel and it dries again it goes away.

I do it the opposite. I pop them in the dryer first for 10 minutes, then I hang them out. I just can't guarantee I'll get there before they are dry!

I don't have a clothesline...yet. I use drying racks on my deck. They are what I use in the house all winter, and it JUST occurred to me this summer that I could put them on the deck and they would dry faster and not add the humidity to the indoor air. In the winter, I LOVE the added humidity!

I "line" dry for environmental reasons as well as saving clothes from the wear of drying. And yes, machine drying wears clothes out MUCH faster, so I also save by not having to replace clothes as often.

I dont line dry either...use to for years before had a dryer...but my main reason why I dry all is because of the crazy lint ...you put a towel on your head and take it off and you have lint all over in your hair..hate it.
