I just got a portable washer from a friend and washed my first few loads. I had no idea clothes came out so stiff if you line dried them!

I used some fabric softener but I think I may have to double up on the amount. It's pretty bad. I also noticed that t-shirts aren't holding their shapes well, they seemed stretched out a bit.
Any suggestions?

So the solution to this problem is after your clothes are dry bring them in, pop them in the dryer with a fabric softner sheet for about 10 min. This will fluff them, take out wrinkles, and make them smell good. Know one will ever know they were line dried.

When I was growing up my mom hung our clothes out all the time..I hated it...everything was so stiff and to me that so called clean air smell stunk. I will not hang anything out side(except for wet swim suits) I use a liquid fabric softner as well as dryer sheets. Plus out in the country...you never know when someone is going to have a burn pile going.

I line dry some things and if they appear to be stiff or wrinkled, I pop them in the dryer for 5 minutes with a damp wash cloth and they come out just as if they'd been dried in it the entire time.

I'll hang anything else to dry, but I don't like the towels that way. Too stiff and scratchy for me. I will continue to use the dryer for those.

Maybe I'm just lazy but it sure seems like a lot of extra work to take the clothes out of the washer, hang them all on the line, take them all back off the line, put them all into the dryer, take them all back out of the dryer, then fold them all and put them all away! We live in a two story house, my washer and dryer are in the basement and our bedrooms are upstairs...I get tired of running down to the basement, then folding on the main floor and then running up stairs to put it all away...numerous times a day!! I hate that!

I don't know how your basement is, but you could always try line drying them in the basement.

Our homeowner's assoc. doesn't allow lines, and that's fine w/me. I grew up w/them - it seemed our dryer was broken a lot, and it was a way to save. HATED IT! The work to hang was backbreaking and killed my shoulders. Had to run and get them when it rained, they froze stiff in the winter. And worse, the dirt and grass on them, and worse of all, the bugs! Not all came off w/snapping and folding. Igh! Plus, we would get these little green inchworms....kinda makes you afraid to go to sleep when you have seen one on your sheets!

Our towels weren't always just stiff, they just wore out more easily, too! Using a dryer makes mine last longer.

Our basement is kinda musty...we really need a dehumidifier so I wouldn't want to hang clothes up there.

I would think that the dryer would wear clothes our much faster?? Drying outside, obviously would cause them to fade a lot faster though.

I just began line drying this week for the first time since I was in my 20's. I was sooooo amazed at how fast the clothes dried. I got all of my clothes done by 3:30 one day ...washed, dried, folded, hung and put away!!! Then I did sheets and towels the next day....wonderful....Definitly going to line dry from now on....and I do stay home so if I worked outside the home..I might machine dry too....it is very nice to get a break from the inside and go outside to hang clothes or take clothes down!
