I did! DD's list called for (2) 16 count crayons and (1) 8 count crayons. Well, a couple of weeks ago 24 count crayons were 9¢ at Office Depot! Wal-mart had them for .20¢ regular price! The 16 count and 8 count? More than $1 each!! So I'm sending (3) 24 counts, and the teacher can throw away the colors she doesn't want.

10 count washable markers.... I found 8 count & a bonus box 11 count, so they are getting the 11 count.

I cannot find a six inch ruler ANYWHERE except in expensive $10 kits that come with a compass, a protractor, and other things a second grader won't be using.

I have a six inch ruler, summeranne! I bought it on clearance (for 5 cents) thinking MY 2nd grader would need it and now he doesn't. Don't they have similar lists countywide? WEIRD!

I almost bought the 97 cent Roseart watercolors over the $2.24 Crayola watercolors (those were requested). I just don't see what the big deal difference is in watercolors! But, since ds is in Kindergarten, I didn't want to start out on the wrong foot.

When my dd was in first grade they requested crayola watercolors. I actually found a new pack at a garage salw for $0.25. I also had the roseart ones as they were on sale. The colors were not the same. I don't know why they wouldn't be?

You would think so! DD is starting 2nd grade also. I mentioned my hassles in finding the ruler to the media specialist (I've been volunteering over the summer so I don't go mad being home ALL THE TIME), and she dug up a bunch that were from a promotional gift and told me if I hear of any of the other moms having trouble to send them to see her for one. :happy dance:

Yes the school list is not real popular here either. My oldest needs a Texas Instrument graphic calculator. I got a Casio at a garage sale that I'm going to send with him. Hopefully it will be fine.

His list is all the normal stuff (crayons, pens, pencils, folders, glue, markers, pencil box, notebooks, binders, kleenex, extra shoes) with many being specifc brands and or sizes
plus
4- low odor Expo dry erase markers
3- black fine sharpies (I've had 1 for many years and the sucker is still going so not sure why he'd need 3!)
10 yes 10 packages of post-it
10 Non-glare page protectors
4 highlighers

That's all I can think of right now but he'll need to bring 3 bags to school the first day just to carry it all

Whew!

Luckily my dd is out of 1st grade and going into 2nd because on the list this year for the 1st graders they have have duplicates of everything one for each classroom. They spend 1/2 day in 1 and 1/2 day in another so they have to duplicate basically the whole list.

That seems silly... why make parents buy twice when they can stick everything into their backpack before they switch classes?

In the town we live in, most of the supplies are pooled together in the classroom anyway. Every kid has to even take a box of kleenex to school on the first day. I'm just glad I don't have to worry about this for a few more years...and maybe by then we will have decided to homeschool, lol.
