It's not a dumb question - if my mom hadn't worked in a convenience store when I was growing up I probably wouldn't have known either.

A loss leader is an item that a store sells at or below their cost (thus, a "loss" for them) but that they use to get you or "lead" you into the store. They are usually advertised on the front or back page of a circular or on a sign hanging in their window. The hope is that while you are in the store buying that great deal, you will buy other things that have a higher profit margin for them.

Thank you, I had no idea what they were either. Oh well. Now we know!

If you can find coupons for the loss leaders, it's a good time to stockpile those items. You can usually get them for a fraction of regular cost or even free.

I have been using coupons a lot in the past 4 or 5 years. I can really save if I take the time to plan. The only store around here that doubles is the one in our small town, their prices are very high though. So you really need to watch the flyers and then go in when things are on sale. Cub Foods has had some really good deals lately too. Free stuff, then really cheap other things, when I use manf. coupons with theirs it has been really good deals, like cereal for under a $1.00 a box.
