I was just reading an article on MSN about Walmart and all the stores they have. Our town recently got a SuperWalmart! Whoopity-do. I only went last week because my dad wanted to get a gift card for my nephew and it was the closest place around. A friend of ours works there and she is a little disappointed with their new policies for salary. However, it is just like any other career, the new people come in making what you are after two years, or above. Our local police deparment has several people who have quit for 6 months, just so they could re-apply and get hired at the current salaries instead of being stuck in their lower ones. This is insane! I commend you for actions.

So I haven't been in a Walmart since I made the original post. I am making a spreadsheet and am going to do all of my comparison shopping this week while dd is in school . I feel liberarted by not going in there. I didn't realize how much time I wasted "running" to Walmart all the time!!

This week I managed to buy more & spend less and I have everything I will need for the week. As a matter of fact, this week my saved total was higher than my spent total at Publix & that included buying papertowels (which I hardley ever use, so I only have to buy them every 4-6 months)!

Thanks for all of the great suggestions and support!

good for you.

I think you will notice that by watching the sale prices in your local stores you will save money over going to Walmart for their everyday price.

Savvy shoppers always win in the end.

DH just watched a special on Walmart and it talked about how underpaid the employees are and how they actually encourage them to get state funded health insurance and medicaid instead of taking what walmart offers. It also talked about how the 5 members of the Walton family are worth many billions of dollars, but contribute very little to charity. The employees as a whole contributed more money to charity through payroll deduct than the company's owners did.

Also the crime rate on walmart property is huge. In the show the walmarts in the last 2 towns I lived in were mentioned regarding crime, 1 being an abduction, rape & then murder of a college student.

Now, I don't beleive everything I hear and read, but I know that walmart is not the same company it was when Sam Walton was alive. I worked for them then, but I wouldn't work for them today. He would roll over in his grave if he saw the way the employees dress & carry themselves and to actually see alchohol sold at walmart just blew my mind!! (don;t get me wrong, we llike our beer & wine just as much as the next person.)

The final straw for me was when we passed a walmart that had moved across the street over 2 years ago and the old building was just sitting there empty. Alot of times when a walmart abandons an older store for a new one, the other stores in the strip mall suffer and may even go out of business. (This is from my own observation.)

.
I also worked for Walmart before. I still shop there. The main reason is that it is nice and clean, and who are we kidding a lot of their prices are really good! I do drive a little further to go to the one that I like because the other ones that are closer are not in a great neighborhood.

Why are you targeting the owner and their families for not contributing money to charity? Unless you know them personally you cannot really say where there money goes. For all we know they could be church goers who give to the church, or give to things annonymously. Alot of people give money but do not want the whole world to know. Employees give money because of many reasons. It might make them feel good, it could be a tax write off, sometimes what they give Walmart matches, or any number of reasons.

Why are you just sticking up for these employees for not making enough money? They are not that low paid. They make more than minimum wage (at least where I live). I have known a lot of other places that made a lot less money than that (USAirways Express) and those employees had a lot more responsiblility than people at Walmart. They are actually responsible for planes and the people on them!

As for the selling of alcohol...it all depends on what state you live in, or what county. If you don't mind my asking do you buy alcohol? If you do you would know that it is usually cheaper than other places. If you do then you go somewhere to buy it without saying how awful they are for selling it.

Working for Walmart (or any retail place for that matter) everyone knows that the store is in business to be #1 in sales.

And the crime rate on Walmart property??? That all depends on where you live and the town that Walmart is in. It is not just Walmart! If you live in a high crime area I am sure that your local convienent stores get robbed and people get mugged. I am sorry to say, but that is how it is today. It is very sad and unfortunate, but that is the world that we live in.

As for the abandoned building...any time a high sales store moves out of a shopping plaza the other stores suffer. Again, I do not understand why Walmart is the one being targeted when this happens all over! Where I used to live the mall didn't renew an Old Navy lease so they left the mall. This really hurt the mall a lot! Where Old Navy moved to was a new shopping plaza where they have been striving since day 1. Of course sometimes the store does just leave on its own. If you owned a business and had the chance to move it someplace different where you could double your sales, wouldn't you?

I am sorry that I went off like that, but I had to voice my opinion, too!

I also wanted to say if you have an Aldis they are great (we had one where we used to live, but they are not out here where we live now). Save-A-Lot was great, too. We belong to Sam's Club because it is the only thing around here. I prefer BJ's, but I have never gone to Costco.

I checked for a Cash and Carry and a grocery outlet, but of course there is none around here. I can go to United or Market Day (which is owned by the same people), Walmart or Target (Walmart is cheaper on most of their grocery items for my area), and Sams Club (which is the best place to buy milk). It all really depends on what you need and is it worth it to drive all over to save a little change.

Personally, I really appreciate WalMart.
Underpaid or not, the employees and their families have a stable job & income.
However, I don't appreciate some of their associates' customer service practices. One bad person seems to taint the rest of the population and I regret to say that this is a generalization I often fall into. They just opened up a brand spanking new supercenter in my subdivision and am thrilled. I've never experienced any crime or eventful circumstance at the walmarts I frequent, but I believe that has to do a lot w/ the neighboorhood statistics. I like WM and any other store that offer great deals and values!

Growing up in Fl I got used to shopping at publix for all my groceries, they have great bogo deals, and if you match those w/coupons you can really save alot! Plus I think the quality of their meats is much better than at wal-mart. I buy alot of cleaning/paper products from dollar general, they are much cheaper than at wal-mart. Good luck!

Go with Target! A few months ago I compared prices of about 20 household items at Walmart and Target; Walmart was cheaper by one whole penny on just about everything! I'll pay a penny to avoid Walmart any day, plus Walmart is 2 miles farther than Target, so I save more than that in gas! Plus, Target runs sales and clearance, so you'll save even more!
