I was wondering if any of you ever barter for things? I received a really nice bread machine as a gift and make homemade whole wheat bread almost every day. We also have a few chickens. SO...I wanted to test the waters of bartering and I asked my child's dance teacher if she could lower his tuition in exchange for some homemade bread and some awesome organic eggs and she said YES! Now I am thinking of other things I could barter...does anyone here have any ideas? Thanks!

That is great! I've never really done bartering because I don't think I'm very good at it. But I do believe it is a great system!

Yes! I love bartering! My mom raised me on it, I guess. Recently I had a colleague approach me about tutoring for her son. I know teachers don't earn much, so instead of taking her cash, I suggested that the kid come over and do some much-needed yardwork. It made everyone happy! He came and worked for 5 hours, earned himself 2.5 hours of tutoring, and has just now scheduled me for the first hour. It's great for him, too, because it's like he has an account with a private tutor that he can fill/replenish at any time.

We don't go looking for it, but Dh esp has 'bartered' in a way when doing computer work for people over the years. He goes into it, happy to do it for free, so he refuses payment and often it just turns into a bartering situation. Like he did some computer work for our dentist, at his home and office, we ended up getting a credit on our account, which was so nice of our dentist!

I really wish bartering was a way of life

I bet alot of ppl. do they are just afraid to ask . But you Never know!!

The only bartering I have done is -
I did my SIL's taxes and she cut Dhs hair free for a Yr. - He works right by her and she is a Liscensed Hair dresser- So She didn't mind - His hair takes 10 Mins to "trim up "

She was ecspecially happy anyway since I got her a Bigger Refund than she Paid $100.00 for the yr. B4!!

I am trying to get the courage to ask my neighbor if they would be willing to swap piano lessons for spanish lessons. She is a native speaker and they have a little girl who is the perfect age to start piano. I have never done any bartering before so this is new territory for me.

My DH and his friends barter all the time. DH fixed friend's computer and his friend (a landscaper) came and did some work at our house. He helped my neighbor do some finishing touches on his family room (paint and put up wainscotting) and our neighbor rehabbed our half bath for us for free. I'm more shy and wish I had the courage to approach people and barter. Especially for babysitting services. My SIL just started doing this with her mom's group and it works out great.

When we moved Dh rounded up his friends and their trucks. They moved everything and it only cost us beer and pizza. Does this count?

There is formal and informal bartering. Among strangers, formal works better because then there is a clearly defined agreement or contract and easier recourse if something goes wrong. The drawback is that the IRS tries to get it's piece from both sides of the bargain if they get wind of it.

Informally, people who care about each other like friends and family keep the "favors" for each other in balance and there is a built in reputation system to keep everyone in line and prevent abuse.

I barter all the time. I used to have a neighbor who cut hair and we used to trade for baby sitting. Another neighbor fixes cars so we trade that for help doing other things like wiring or baby sitting. I trade jelly and jam with my neighbor for other baked goods. We do it here a lot.
