We have done that the past few years. Only bought for those 18 and younger. Now my grandparents always say they will stick to it and only buy for the great-grandkids but they always end up getting for the grandkids (me and my siblings) too. It keeps things cheaper for everyone and then we can focus on the kids more. We like it this way.

We started this year. Our primary reason is for saving money. My secondary reason is I'm tired of getting junk. I don't need a santa cookie jar or a rudolf oven mitt! I would rather do a family gathering and let the children enjoy the magic of the season.

We are starting this year with DH's family. There are 7 grandchildren now, and the past couple of years we were drawing names for the adults, but it was ridiculous how many gift cards and impersonal gifts were given.
Now we get MIL a gift (something reasonable), step MIL (a little smaller), and a gift for the nieces and nephews. It's usually a couple of books, they don't always appreciate it, but they blame it on that we're teachers...it's really because DH always receives gift cards from local bookstores as gifts from students, we end up only having to spend about $20 for all of them!
We get my parents a gift (usually a reasonable combo gift, and something homemade). Our son is the only grandkid in my family, so we still get gifts for my sister and her partner (usually a combo gift) and my brother. We'll see what happens if eventually there are more grandkids. We only buy DS one gift so far, he's still little and he gets gifts from family.
We're also making jam for everyone this year, a nice treat.
DH and I do not get gifts for each other, we receive one from my parents and family members and MIL. We've joked in the past that if the car needs repairs or there's an unexpected expense that it's our "Christmas Gift". We also don't do bday gifts, our bdays are a few days apart, so we try to go drive somewhere pretty for the weekend instead.

Glad to know we're not the only ones that have to be creative! Sometimes I feel like the rest of the world is swimming in gifts, you should see what my nieces and nephews get.....
