We're starting to use the dried black beans and just freezing a large batch. We eat a lot of black beans. Friends of mine do this and when she told me about it I had to laugh because I had never thought about not buying them in the can! They are a lot cheaper this route. I do keep a couple of cans on hand -- let's face it, they are easier.

Regarding the meat. I try my best to find organic chicken and beef, instead of just going the cheapiest route possible. I usually get my chickens from a place out of Montana and they send them whole. It isn't a chore that I enjoy (I use to be vegetarian) but I do manage to boil and cut that thing up. One chicken, this route, usually lasts us two months after I freeze it.

she boils the entire five lbs. of ground beef? I brown it..have never boiled it. The rest of the dumb question..does the beef get brown like it does in a frying pan? So you can tell it's done. If anyone knows..Thanks!

I have cooked chicken and froze it for later before. I also dice up onions and freeze them. But I have never boiled beef before. It makes sense, I boil chicken. I am going to try it and see if it still looks appetizing. Of course once you put it in your chili or spaghetti who is to know?
