I think it depends too...I would never send anyone a 'wish' list of any kind unless they asked for information/ideas/a list specifically. Otherwise, I think it's incredibly tacky. There are people in our lives that ask specifically for a wish list for our kids for the holidays because they really want to get what the kids want and don't have kids of their own, so they need specifics.
For myself, when my MIL asks me for a list, I put down a few specific things but I also include things like "an opera CD" or "new kitchen towels". I think a list can be a good tool, but a lot of times, at least for myself, I just use it as a jumping off point.
I think it's also tacky to get registry cards with shower invitations or have it printed on wedding or birthday invitations.
