Used items "scream" cheap when given as gifts. You can give a brand new item that you get for cheap, but it doesn't "scream" cheap. The value is still there.
I think the thought is more important than the tag. BUT, the ultimate deciding factor is the individual peson the gift is for. We all know who those people are in our lives.

I buy presents all year long at yard sales, pawn shops, thrift stores, consignment stores.etc. By doing this, I do not contribute to more landfill problems, exploitation of resources, workers, etc, AND I save enough money to buy people things they REALLY want..I got my 10 year old an electric guitar that retails for $600.00 for $70.00 including the amplifier...(!) He will be much happier with this , than a $70.00 "new" one.
WOO HOO! I love this mind set and hate the fact tha with a newborn, one year old and two year old it is nearly impossible for me to find quality used items. I simply do not have the time to scour through piles of junk to find what we are looking for. I feel guilty for spending the money and killing the planet, but hey I have managed to maintain my sanity.

As others have said, I wouldn't hesitate to buy used or like new condition for my kids. I wouldn't do it for other family members though, what if they didn't like it or wanted to exchange? That wouldn't hurt my feelings any & I would want to have the option of exchanging a gift that was given to me as well.

I still stand by my original statement (above), however I do have to add this to it. After reading the post about the guitar (I would have done that too).

I buy antiques for my SIL. She collects some dishes that aren't new so I have found pieces at Thrift stores and Garage sales. She is thrilled to be adding to her collection and she knows that they are used.

I also have a friend who does cakes and loves Wilton Cake pans. I have bought her some discontinued ones at yard sales and thrift stores. She also knows that they are used but she is happy because it is something she loves and couldn't get new.
