Up until last month, I've been getting my hair highlighted since high school. My hair was like 5 different shades of blonde over my light brown hair. I decided to go all dark brown. She did a great job but I think I can do this myself since it is all one color. I am a little paranoid about doing it myself. My hair has a little red tone because of my bleached hair under this coloring. I don't know what shade I should use next time to achieve the same results. I guess I could ask the stylist. I like having color on my hair because it gives it a nice texture. Otherwise I have limp mousy brown hair.

How many of you color your own hair? What do you use? Are you happy with the results?

i used to be a stylist i would caution you since your hair has been highlighted underneath the redish brown you have now it may be hard to get a good shade doing it yourself once hair has been bleached and lightend the pigment is gone forever. if you are gonna try it your self i would go with a natural color(don't go to warm over the counter tend to run on the warm side) and go lighter than you think you are by looking at the box because your hair is probably a little more porus than some since it has been lightend for so long. maybe try one of the rinse out ones first to find a color that you like. good luck home hair color is definately trial and error and make sure you condition well so it does not dry out.

Thanks for the reality check. I will probably be too chicken to do it myself. I don't want to have purple or green hair!

i don't want to scare you away from doing it becuase once you find a good shade it could save you alot of money maybe if you want to try and do it i would wait until the holidays are over(since you probably will be out and about with more people socially) just in case you don't get a shade you love the first time...

I used to pay every 6 weeks to get my hair colored, but then I decided to try to do it myself and have been doing it ever since. I would say for the past 3 years or so. I have VERY thick hair, so I need 2 boxes, but it saves me from having to pay a stylist and it comes out just fine. Try it, the worst you can do is go back to your stylist and have it recolored...lol!

I would talk to your stylist and ask for some tips. Heck, even go buy a couple of boxes of dye and take them with you for her to look at. I have always dyed my own hair. I have thick VERY dark brown hair, so it takes a lot of stuff to change my hair any color. Also, if you are gonna do highlights or anything, call a girlfriend or sister if you have one to come help. Last time I did my hair my sister did if for me. We stripped out the color of my hair on 50% of my head and than put some deep auburn on top of it. Altogether for the supplies, bleach, cap, color, etc it cost me $13-Sally Beauty. Last time I got my hair cut, I told the gal what we did (she complimented me on my hair color!!) and she told me that it would have cost me a min. of $120 to get it done by her!! YIKES!

A visual of myself with green hair matching the Christmas tree came to mind. I won't need to do it for a month or two but thanks for the suggestion

I have an extremely low maintenance hair color (black) so I do it myself.

I do it myself. My stylist is great and encourages me to do it to save money since she knows I am a sahm with three kids. She said I have found the perfect color for me. I don't think it looks any different than a professional. I use Loreal Feira Light Brown.
