If prices of gas, groceries, heating fuel, etc. start to go down again, will you keep your frugal ways?

Will you go back to your old spending habits?

What motivates you to keep your spending in check?

We want to keep up our current rate of savings and we are also working on having our mortgage paid off in 5 more years. It is a 15 year mortgage and we would have it paid off in 11 years.

I think about those things when I plan my menu with a meatless meal two nights a week instead of one.

How about you ladies?

I will continue to do the same. Saving gas by running all my errands at once, really makes life much easier on me, especially since 99% of the time, I have one or all the kids with me.
I like saving money at the grocery store by using coupons because it allows me to get more items; what money I save, I do spend usually on fresh fruits and veggies for the kids.

Call me cynical but unfortunately I don't think prices of gas and the trickle down effect at the grocery store is going to go down anytime soon.

I will continue my frugal ways. My motivation is to pay down our debt, and to be a good example for my girls.

Really, for us, the current prices of those things aren't affecting the way we're trying to live below our means. I want financial freedom and security! I want to pad our retirement funds, pay off the mortgage early, and pre-fund most, if not all, of our kids' college costs. Those are goals which are so tangible for me, it wouldn't matter if the price of gas went down.

Even if the price of petrol and food etc went down, I'd still be frugal as my main goal is to pay off he debt, buy a house and takemore family holidays. Saving money helps on all these aspects.

I would still be frugal.

A retired couple put it to me bluntly during a conversation one day by saying "what you think will be enough to comfortably retire on, won't " then it went to:

1) We did not plan on the cost of living to go so high;
2) We did not plan on car payments;
3) We did not plan on no medical coverage/medicare co-pays/our employer charging co-pays for benefits with severe lack of coverage;
4) We saved half of the amount that we need, that's why he works part-time and she babysits(they are in their 70's)

There were a few other basic issues.

They went on to say to make sure that we put money away in CD's now so you will have that income every month in addition to any pension, 401K/IRA, ect. because even they do not think that SS will be around then either. (We do this already because my grandmother told us to do this, she was a single mother who was self employed)

Even if it is $100 for a CD each month, put it in. It will be your groceries one month or a prescription one month by the time we retire with the rollovers.

We might see the price of milk , eggs and gas drop a few cents some day but over all they prices will stay high. Once the prices have been raised for a long period they wont drop much and those now high prices will be the norm. I will stay frugal as long as we have dept to pay off and repairs that need to be made on the home. After that it will be something wlse like college for the girls , so NO I dont think I will ever be waistfull of my money again.
