Dh and I have an appt with the Direct Buy showroom for a tour in a couple of weeks. I actually got it through mypoints, and got like 500 points for signing up, figured WTH, I'll see whats its all about.

Anyone actually belong? Pros? Cons? What do you think?

I've read bad things about them, that they use high pressure sales techniques to sign up, give you issues when you try to cancel within your rescind period, and there are no true savings, that you can't get on your own. Do some googling. I've read it both in Consumer Reports and by googling on the web. Type in Direct Buy Complaint and you'll see posts so you can decide for yourself. Lots of complaints. (I looked into them before because they advertise heavily here.)

My FIL and MIL went on a tour. They said it was a total scam. It costs THOUSANDS of dollars a year to belong. If you have an extra 4 grand laying around and you are wanting to do a $30,000 plus home renovation, it might be worth the money. My MIL and FIL also said that they were pressured to join that day and were told that if they did not join that day they could NEVER come back on another tour again. What kind of a place does business like that?

I trust their opinion, but you should go to the thing and see if they treat everyone that way. I will be staying far away from Direct Buy.

My friends got totally ripped off by it. They bought into it and never used it once. They said they got cheaper stuff elsewhere. They tried to get out of it and couldn't and had to suck it up for a year or whatever they signed up for.

She did say a few things were cheaper, but nothing they were int he marker for. Apparently you have to be going to spend a lot of money to make the cost worth it.

I don't belong but my Aunt does and she really liked it. She used them when they built their new house. I don't know much about it other than that they belonged for quite a while.

I've also read not great things about them...you have pay thousands to be a 'member' and their prices aren't as great as you'd think them to be. I am sure it really depends on what you want, where you shop etc

I'm not one for high pressure anything...so Direct Buy does NOT appeal to me. I think the saying "if it sounds too good to be true..." is appropriate for them!

There is a lot of information online about them, people who have signed up and what happened to them etc

Good luck!

I think there are very specific circumstances under which Direct Buy works--such as if you had a ton of money anyway, and were going to re-do your whole house or always buying new furniture and things.
My fiance got a membership before we were together; he used it to buy new living room furniture, and for some miscellaneous things for a condo he was fixing up--however, I definitely do not believe he got his moneys worth. Things are somewhat cheaper, yes, but I don't believe he got his 4K back.
I would not recommend it.

My friends belonged when they were building their house and they thought it was totally worth it but I guess it just depends on the circumstances. I saw several items they purchased there and they told me how much they paid, They got some GREAT deals on beautiful, high-end pieces. I don't believe they extended their membership after they completed and furnished their new home.

From what I gathered...pretty much the same as everyone else! If you are going to custom-build a home or do some major renovations, it's probably a good deal. Also..if you are really into the high end stuff. Ex: You could probably get a $2500 living room couch for $1200...but guess what?! My couch for my living room cost $400 and that was plenty! We are very happy with it! I mean we found our drapes for $15 at Burlington Coat Factory and they are perfect in front or our Bay Window! That's my kind of shopping. So yeah..you can get good deals there...but most of us would still be paying more than we are willing to spend on our home. I mean we have lives! Famlies..children...I'd personally rather go to the beach w/my family! Just my opinion.

Thanks for the advice, I think I'll cancel my appt. I'm not looking to redo my whole house, and I CERTAINLY don't have $4000 so that parts easy. LOL
