Default Dish Network dilemma

Well our Dish Network is going up next month, we currently pay $61 monthly including all taxes and fees, etc. We're not sure on what it's going up to.

Here is the dilemma. We are not huge TV watchers to say the least. On a typical day, the tv will not be turned on until maybe 5:00 or so, my ds likes to watch Peep on Discovery Kids (We have DVR - Dish's 'Tivo'). He will watch maybe 45 mins. of tv a day, less in the summer time. Dh and I will not watch tv until maybe 9:00 or so, the news and then one or two half hour shows, we like the Sci-fi channel, Food Network, and HGTV.

Anyway, dh looked up on Dish that we could save $$ with getting the Top 100 shows. Which I think would encompass what dh and I watch. But if we want Discovery Kids it's extra - way into the next 'package'.

Ds only watches several shows, all on Discover Kids: Peep and the Big Wide World, Bindi the Jungle Girl, and maybe one other show. He was into Croc Files for a long time too. He won't watch any other kinds of tv, which is fine. He is definitely more 'science' oriented, he has never watched a Disney movie, he has absolutely no interest. Which is fine by me. However, sometimes he just needs a little wind down time and Discovery Kids is what he watches.

Should we get rid of it? Everyone needs a little downtime, and these few shows that he watches is his down time. He is very particular about what he watches, and I've never seen the shows he watches on DVD at the library.

Help!

I don't pay much more than you and I have Dish, bundled through At &t with my phone and internet. Could you look into that option maybe combining would still it make it worth and then ds would not lose those shows?

I have never seen those shows on Dvd at the library either, my boys like the ones from Popular Science/Mechanics for kids a lot and I do get those from the library.

We have Dish as well and got the same letter...wasn't it nice how they didn't say how much it's going up?! LOL Ugh.

We're not big TV people either, but we do like a few shows that aren't in the top 100, so we're keeping it and grumbling about the increase.

Call them and talk to them. My experience, when I was turning off our Dish awhile back, is that they are very willing to lower their rates if they think that you are willing to give up their services. In my case, I was giving up their services, at one point they even offered me pick the two channels that we did watch and just pay for those! I was tempted in that case!

If you're just keeping it for your son and his down time then take the $60.00 and buy him some videos -- near as I can tell you can find most kids shows on DVD's these days. That is what we do at our house and you don't have commericals!!! I'm very anti-commerical!

I agree that you should call them and see what they can work out for you. We have Directv and I've done that several times over the years when we wanted to add something. They've always been good about working with us. We did run into one person one time who wasn't very cooperative so we just called back later and got someone different. So give them a call and keep your fingers crossed!

hmm, when did you guys get these letters? I am assuming now that one will be coming to me since I think I am smack dab in the middle as far as service vicinity! Still, I bet their cheaper than the rip off cable company of Cox!

Call them up and ask for the retention center. And tell them you are going to switch to DirectTv. Even if you aren't this works. My friend did and actually she had no intention of switching and she got all of her "demands"!

They will maybe give you some sort of credit each month or upgrade your package w/o paying more.
It can't hurt.

Also I let my son watch episodes of Little Bear on You Tube. This maybe an option if you will set it up on the computer for them and you have a highspeed internet connection.

Hope this helps!

Thank you, we are definitely going to give them a call!! Just a question - if we want the top 100 package but only want one other channel on it - can they do it - I mean technology wise - can they do this kind of thing?

Be aware that if you Cancell the dish, they will automatically take like $300. right out of your credit or debit card untill they send you Boxes and you send the equiptment back to them then they will refund the money! I know cuz They did it to me!!!
I now have Direct TV, its a LOT cheeper and better picture and channels!
